CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Ford Expedition

Summary
With 986 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,382, 32.2% of 2016 Ford Expeditions for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Ford Expedition 4.5 / 5 stars.
64.5% of 2016 Expedition models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford Expedition stands out as a full-size SUV that leans hard into family-hauling comfort. It offers a third row of seats, plenty of passenger space, and a smooth ride thanks to its independent rear suspension, and the buying guide also notes adjustable pedals as a feature you can get on the Expedition. Owners echo that appeal, often praising the spacious cabin and quiet operation, along with fuel efficiency that feels favorable for such a large SUV.
It also benefits from the Expedition’s close relationship to the Ford F-150, which gives it familiar truck-based toughness and a rear-wheel-drive base layout with four-wheel drive available. The model’s technology story is another strength: the Expedition has kept pace with modern features over time, and the buying guide points to available amenities such as satellite radio, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 360-degree cameras, and hands-free driving capabilities. At the same time, it is not a luxury SUV by default, and the buying guide’s cons note that it can be loud on the highway, tough to drive in tight spaces, and dependent on premium fuel for maximum horsepower.

Great truck, very roomy and has all the features we need at a budget friendly price.

The truck is loaded with features. I think the price was fair, but after taking a long drive, I discovered the engine has a miss. Hopefully a tune up will fix the situation. Compares to a tahoe, suburban and yukon.

This car has all our bells and whistles that my previous 2003 Ford Expedition lacked but I’ve had it for 18 years and it was named The Gus Bus.

Reviewed a 2016 Ford EL XLT 4WD on Mar 21, 2025
If dealers would repair them accurately I may like them better. The dealer just kept throwing parts and the car still has the same problem. I loved my 2004 expedition Eddie Bauer better. This seems like it always is coming up with an issue.

Is the 2016 Ford Expedition a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Ford Expedition earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners repeatedly praise the spacious cabin, smooth ride, and quiet operation, and they also note favorable fuel efficiency for a large SUV. That makes it a strong fit if you want a family-hauling full-size SUV with comfort and space as priorities. With 32.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Ford Expedition reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also includes reliability-positive language around being dependable and trouble-free enough for family use, even though some drivers mention reliability concerns and dealer-service frustration. For used buyers, that means you should treat condition and maintenance history as important filters rather than assuming every example will age the same way.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford Expedition?
At 64.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage or lower-priced listings. Focus your condition check on signs of past repairs, uneven wear, and anything that suggests the SUV has been used hard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Expedition?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 975 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.86% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,057, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford Expedition's resale value?
The current average of $13,395 sits slightly below last year's $13,932.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend more on condition, mileage, and documentation than on broad market momentum. Well-kept examples should stand out more clearly when shoppers compare them against the wider inventory.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford Expedition or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.86% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,646, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $13,395 average.
- It offers a familiar, established formula with a meaningful efficiency upgrade.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the better primary target. If your main goal is spending less upfront, the 2015 is the better secondary path, especially if you find one in excellent condition with solid maintenance records.
