overall

Summary
With 3,140 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,183.00, 29.4% of 2016 Ford Escapes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Ford Escape 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford Escape stands out as a compact crossover that blends agile handling, stout engine options, and comfortable seating. It is also described as a stalwart fixture in one of the most competitive segments in the automotive landscape, which helps explain why it remains appealing to buyers looking for a well-rounded small SUV.
Its most notable update is an all-new infotainment system named Sync 3, which was intended to correct the sins of technology past and strengthen the Escape’s place in the segment. That focus on improving the in-car experience adds to the Escape’s appeal, especially for shoppers who want a practical crossover with a more modern feel. Owner feedback also points to zippy performance, stylish design, and plenty of interior space, though some drivers have noted practicality concerns with the gas flap and tight driver-side space.

I love the zippy way this SUV drives. It also maneuvers well because of its compact size. Plenty of room inside to be comfortable. Fords issues with the CDT kept me from giving it 5 stars. Carfax revealed this part was replaced on the Escape that I purchased. So far no problems.

CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2016 Ford Escape prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2016 Ford Escape cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,216 |
| Year-Round Low | $9,156.20 |
| Year-Round High | $9,997.58 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $9,997 |

Prices have softened 7.81% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,101 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $9,156.20, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Ford Escape a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Ford Escape earns a 4.62/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance, Cost effectiveness, and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its zippy performance, stylish design, and plenty of interior space. The overview also points to agile handling and comfortable seating, which fits well if you want a practical compact crossover that still feels easy to drive. With 29.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Ford Escape reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback highlights a vehicle that many drivers find dependable, with praise for its zippy performance and overall appeal over time. The expert review also notes that the Escape has improved over the last 15 years, and the cost-effectiveness discussion says reliability scores quite high. Ford’s announced maintenance and ownership incentives also help soften the day-to-day burden for some buyers.
For used shoppers, the main long-term ownership risk is that early issues can still affect resale and confidence, so condition and history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford Escape?
At 68% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, and any evidence that accident repairs were not fully corrected. It also makes sense to pay close attention to interior condition and usability quirks, since some owners mention practicality concerns.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim includes a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, rear-view camera, blind-spot monitoring, and MyKey parental controls, while the SE adds 17-inch alloys, automatic headlights, fog lights, an 8-way power driver’s seat, and satellite radio. The Titanium trim adds keyless entry and ignition, a power liftgate with foot sensor, a 10-speaker Sony stereo with HD Radio, and ambient interior lighting.
- Powertrain: The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 168 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. SE and Titanium trims use a 1.6-liter EcoBoost turbo four with 178 hp and 184 lb-ft, and the 2.0-liter EcoBoost delivers 240 hp and 270 lb-ft for the strongest acceleration.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes a rear-view camera, blind-spot monitoring, and MyKey parental controls. The available Technology Package adds HID headlamps, blind-spot detection, auto wipers, and active park assist, but it is not standard on every trim.
- Infotainment: Sync 3 centers on a 7-inch touchscreen. It did not launch with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, though the model was slated to receive an update later in the year.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-liter engine returns 22 mpg city/31 highway. The 1.6-liter EcoBoost gets 23/32 with FWD and 22/29 with AWD. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost returns 22/30 with FWD and 21/28 with AWD.
Which 2016 Ford Escape trim should I buy?
The 2016 Ford Escape is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, Titanium.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The S trim gives you useful standard safety and convenience features, but it lacks the upgraded powertrain and richer equipment found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SE is the best value if you want the stronger 1.6-liter EcoBoost, plus automatic headlights, fog lights, and an 8-way power driver’s seat.
- Premium/top trim: The Titanium is the most fully equipped choice, adding keyless entry and ignition, a power liftgate, a premium Sony audio system, and ambient interior lighting.
The available Technology Package adds HID headlamps, blind-spot detection, auto wipers, and active park assist.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Escape?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting deep discounts on every listing.
- Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,101 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.81% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,156.20, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford Escape's resale value?
The current average of $9,216 sits slightly below last year's $9,997.
That softer pricing suggests the model is still accessible on the used market, but it also means future sellers may need to stay competitive on asking price. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be better positioned than someone who overpays today. The current market also shows that buyers are still willing to consider this model when the price and condition line up.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Ford Escape safe?
It earns an overall four-star rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and five-star ratings in side crash tests. It also received a Good rating in moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact, and roof-strength tests, but a Poor result in the small-overlap frontal-offset test.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, a full suite of airbags, a rear-view camera, blind-spot monitoring, and MyKey parental controls. The available Technology Package adds HID headlamps, blind-spot detection, auto wipers, and active park assist. The small-overlap frontal-offset result is the main caution point for used buyers.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford Escape or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.81% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds Sync 3 and a stronger focus on modern in-car tech.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $8,404, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $9,216 average.
- It feels friendly and approachable while still delivering a polished driving experience.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,575, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $9,216 average.
- It adds a facelift, interior improvements, and more updated safety and tech.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, tech, and broad market availability, the 2016 is the sensible middle ground. If your priority is spending less, the 2015 is the value play; if you want the newer refresh and can pay more, the 2017 is the upgrade path.
