Why it stands out
The 2016 FIAT 500X stands out as a credible entry in the hot small crossover SUV segment and a potential game-changer for the brand. Fiat’s challenge with this model is simple but important: get the details right. That makes the 500X appealing to buyers who want a small crossover that feels like more than just another utility vehicle, especially if they are drawn to a distinctive brand image and a fresh take on the segment.
The available test-drive commentary suggests the 500X is off to a good start, with the possibility of changing Fiat’s course if it proves reliable and performs well in crash testing. Owner feedback adds that the 2016 FIAT 500X is often appreciated for its fun driving experience, affordability, attractive design, good fuel economy, and useful features such as GPS and Bluetooth. At the same time, some owners reported problems with specific cars, including rough engine performance and interior damage, so condition and reliability matter a great deal when shopping for one.

This car is so much fun to drive. Its great on fuel and all the little bells and whistles (GPS, Bluetooth, parking assist) make it a step above. The suspension is a little stiff, so Ill be looking at helping that, but otherwise, its a great little car and Im super happy with it.

The car I viewed wasnt worth the asking price. Had some major issues. Now if it had been up to standard etc. Then yes they are good cars. The drivers side door handle was missing the windshield was cracked badly, the engine was running very rough, and Vibrated and pulled to the right. Would not pay for what they were asking... $9950.00 Cost more to have everything repaired. But once again these are good cars if you find a good one.

Is the 2016 FIAT 500X a good car?
Generally — the 4.17/5 user rating suggests owners are fairly satisfied with the 2016 FIAT 500X. The expert rating is 7/10, which lines up with a model that brings real appeal without being a slam dunk.
The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
Owners repeatedly praise its fun driving experience, affordability, and attractive design. They also call out good fuel economy and useful features like GPS and Bluetooth, which fits a small crossover that aims to feel more distinctive than a typical utility vehicle.
Given the overview, this is the kind of used SUV that can make sense if you want a stylish, small crossover with personality rather than a plain commuter box. The market also shows 28.2% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 FIAT 500X reliable?
Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a model that can be dependable when you find a good example, with repeated emphasis on reliability and a trouble-free ownership experience. At the same time, some owners mention rough engine performance and interior damage on specific cars, so condition matters a lot.
The expert commentary also suggests the 500X has the potential to be a long-term contender if it proves itself over time, but it stops short of giving you a firm durability verdict. On the ownership-cost side, the maintenance and warranty discussion suggests you should pay close attention to coverage and expected upkeep before you buy.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is ending up with a poorly maintained example that exposes the model’s uneven track record.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 FIAT 500X?
At 65.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car drives as smoothly as it should, since owner feedback points to some problem vehicles. If possible, compare several listings side by side so you can separate a clean, well-kept example from one that has been compromised.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Pop trim has a contrast-color dashboard insert and a 2-tone appearance for the seats and door panels, while the Lounge and Trekking Plus can add leather with deep brown seat surfaces and door panel inserts. The Trekking models bring more rugged styling cues, so you should pay attention to whether the look and equipment match what you want.
- Powertrain: Most versions use a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with 180 hp, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and available front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The engine is strong enough for freeway speeds and mountain grades, but the transmission can shift in ways that feel less intuitive than you might want.
- Safety package: Depending on configuration, you can get forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with active lane assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection, rear parking assist sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high-beam headlights. Some of these features are tied to specific configurations, so verify the exact equipment on the listing you’re considering.
- Infotainment: The available 6.5-inch Uconnect screen is easy to use, and it can include navigation. Wireless smartphone integration is not mentioned, and Uconnect Access services are not offered with this setup.
- Fuel efficiency: The front-drive model is rated at 22 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined, while the all-wheel-drive version is rated at 24 mpg combined. In testing, the vehicle returned 21.9 mpg over a week and 25.6 mpg on a standard loop.
Which 2016 FIAT 500X trim should I buy?
The 2016 FIAT 500X is offered in 5 trim levels: Pop, Easy, Lounge, Trekking, and Trekking Plus.
Here's the short version:
- Pop: This is the entry point, and it already brings the 2-tone interior treatment with the contrast-color dashboard insert. If you want the lowest-cost way into the 500X, this is the trim to start with, but you should be especially careful about feature gaps versus the higher trims.
- Easy: This trim sits above the base model and is part of the standard lineup, making it a sensible step up if you want a little more equipment without chasing the most expensive versions.
- Lounge: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it combines the more upscale feel of the cabin with available features like the optional navigation system and the well-regarded Uconnect setup. It also pairs well with the safety add-ons mentioned in the test-drive notes.
- Trekking: Choose this if you want the more rugged styling cues called out in the test-drive commentary. It is the trim to consider if appearance matters and you want the 500X to look a bit more adventurous.
- Trekking Plus: This is the most upscale-looking version in the lineup, with the same more rugged styling direction and the option for leather with rich brown surfaces. It makes sense if you want the most distinctive presentation.
The safety content also notes that some driver-assistance features depend on configuration, so confirm exactly which systems are included before you buy.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 FIAT 500X?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 170 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.40% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,919.38, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 FIAT 500X's resale value?
The current average of $8,167 sits slightly below last year's $8,820.
That kind of price movement suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you purchase a clean, well-kept example, you may have a better chance of limiting further value loss than if you overpay for a rough one. The strongest resale outcomes usually come from vehicles that are easy for the next buyer to trust, and condition will matter a lot here.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 FIAT 500X safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Depending on configuration, you can get forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with active lane assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection, rear parking assist sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high-beam headlights. That gives you a meaningful safety-tech menu, but you should verify which items are standard on the exact trim you’re considering.
The safety commentary also flags the LATCH system as a concern and notes that 911 Assist emergency calling is unavailable for this model. Since crash testing had not been completed in the source material, you should lean heavily on the vehicle’s equipment list and condition when evaluating a used example.
Should I buy a 2016 FIAT 500X or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.40% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary says Fiat is off to a good start with this model and that it could change the brand’s course if it proves reliable and performs well.
The bottom line: The 2016 is the year to target if you want the strongest mix of price softness, inventory, and owner satisfaction in this snapshot. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2016 also gives you a better chance to shop the lower end of the market without giving up the core appeal of the 500X.
