Is the 2016 FIAT 500X a good car?

Generally — the 2016 FIAT 500X earns a 4.17/5 user rating and a 7.00/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its fun driving experience, affordability, attractive design, good fuel economy, and useful features like GPS and Bluetooth. That lines up with the 500X’s role as a small crossover meant to stand out in a crowded segment while still giving you a practical, stylish daily driver. Good and great deals account for 30.2% of listings, so you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 FIAT 500X reliable?

Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owners’ feedback points to a model that can be dependable and trouble-free when you find a good example, but it also mentions rough engine performance and interior damage on some vehicles. The expert drive notes also describe the 500X as a vehicle whose long-term reliability is still an open question, and the cost-effectiveness discussion reinforces that uncertainty around long-term ownership. If you’re shopping used, the main risk is ending up with a poorly maintained example, so condition and service history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 FIAT 500X?

At 65.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on signs of prior body damage, uneven wear, and any evidence that the car has been repaired after a collision. Because some owners reported rough engine performance and interior damage, you’ll want to pay close attention to how the car drives and how well the cabin has held up.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 500X is offered in Pop, Easy, Lounge, Trekking, and Trekking Plus trim levels. The Pop trim has a contrast-color dashboard insert and a 2-tone appearance for the seats and door panels, while Lounge and Trekking Plus can add leather with deep brown seat surfaces and door panel inserts. The Trekking models bring more rugged styling cues, so you should compare appearance and interior finish carefully if you want the best value.
• Powertrain: All versions except the base Pop trim use a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with 180 hp, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. You can choose front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and the AWD system uses a fully-disconnecting rear axle to help efficiency when extra grip is not needed.
• Safety package: Depending on configuration, you can get forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with active lane assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection, rear parking assist sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high-beam headlights. The Lounge Collection 1 package adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, and rear parking-assist sensors.
• Infotainment: The available 6.5-inch touchscreen with optional navigation keeps the system easy to use, with traditional knobs for volume and tuning. It supports iPhone pairing, music streaming, phone calls, and Android voice-text reply capability, but Uconnect Access services are not offered with it.
• Fuel efficiency: The front-wheel-drive model is rated at 22 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined, while the all-wheel-drive version is rated at 24 mpg combined.

Which 2016 FIAT 500X trim should I buy?

The 2016 FIAT 500X is offered in 5 trim levels: Pop, Easy, Lounge, Trekking, and Trekking Plus.

Here's the short version:

• Pop: This is the entry point, and it still gets a contrast-color dashboard insert plus a 2-tone look for the seats and door panels. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the 500X and care more about style than extra equipment.
• Easy: This trim sits above Pop and is a sensible step up if you want a little more content without moving too far up the price ladder. It’s the trim to consider if you want a balanced mix of value and everyday usability.
• Lounge: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds a more upscale feel, and the test vehicle’s Lounge Collection 1 package brought blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, and rear parking-assist sensors for a reasonable price. If you want the most well-rounded version, start here.
• Trekking: Choose this if you want the more rugged styling cues called out in the review. It’s the trim for you if appearance matters and you want the 500X to look a bit more adventurous.
• Trekking Plus: This is the most upscale-looking of the rugged trims, and it can be paired with leather and richer interior surfaces. It suits you if you want the most distinctive styling and a more premium cabin feel.

Safety-wise, the available driver-assistance features vary by configuration, so you should verify exactly which package is on the vehicle you’re considering.

• Deal availability: 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 182 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.24% compared with last year.

What is the 2016 FIAT 500X's resale value?

The current average of $7,936 sits slightly below last year's $8,649.

That price movement suggests the 500X has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the current market shows that demand is still present, but pricing remains sensitive to condition, mileage, and equipment. Well-kept examples should be easier to move than neglected ones, especially because shoppers are likely to compare them closely on history and features.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 FIAT 500X safe?

The 2016 FIAT 500X has not been crash tested by NHTSA or IIHS in the available review material.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Depending on configuration, you can get forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with active lane assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection, rear parking assist sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high-beam headlights. The review also notes a trouble point with the LATCH system and says 911 Assist emergency calling is unavailable for this model.

Should I buy a 2016 FIAT 500X or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 65.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.24% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The expert summary says Fiat needed the 500X to prove reliable and earn strong crash-test results, and that it was off to a good start.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current pricing, available inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the one to focus on. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still find value here, but you should be selective and prioritize condition, history, and equipment over simply chasing the cheapest listing.
