Is the 2016 Cadillac ATS a good car?

Generally — 4.2/5 from owners and 7.5/10 from our experts. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, and Safety.

It also stands out as a compact luxury sedan that feels rewarding to drive, with the 2016 update adding a more potent engine and Apple CarPlay. For you, that means the ATS makes the most sense if you want a compact luxury sedan that prioritizes driving feel and a modernized cabin over maximum interior space. Good and great deals account for 29.7% of listings, which suggests there are still some attractive buys in the market.

Is the 2016 Cadillac ATS reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on its smooth ride, strong handling, and overall value. The expert notes also emphasize a competent chassis and road manners that help the ATS feel composed over time. Cadillac’s added maintenance-friendly updates for 2016 further support the ownership case. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about whether the car has been cared for well enough to avoid interior and infotainment frustrations.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Cadillac ATS?

At 47.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had prior bodywork or higher mileage. Pay close attention to cabin condition, infotainment operation, and how the car feels on the road, since owner feedback points to interior and interface complaints. If you’re comparing multiple listings, focus on maintenance records, trim equipment, and whether the car’s condition matches the asking price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.5-liter setup is limited to Standard or Luxury trims and rear-wheel drive, while the 2.0-liter turbo expands into Standard, Luxury, Performance, and Premium trims with rear- or front-wheel drive. The 3.6-liter V6 is offered in Luxury, Performance, and Premium packages only, so base-trim shoppers give up some equipment and flexibility.
• Powertrain: The 2.5-liter four makes 202 hp and is the least compelling choice, while the 2.0-liter turbo delivers 272 hp and the 3.6-liter V6 brings 333 hp with cylinder deactivation for better fuel economy. All engines use an 8-speed automatic, and the 2.5-liter is the only one available with a manual.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes airbags, disc brakes, traction control, and antilock braking. Optional driver aids include blind-spot monitoring, forward collision alerts, automatic seatbelt tightening, lane-departure warnings, and cross-traffic alerts, with a heads-up display available in Performance and Premium models.
• Infotainment: Apple CarPlay is part of the 2016 update, and the system centers on an 8-inch touchscreen. You should also check the steering-wheel controls and overall interface usability, since the controls can feel confusing.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-liter returns 21 mpg city/33 highway, the 2.0-liter turbo posts 21/30 in rear-wheel-drive automatic form and 20/28 with all-wheel drive, and the 3.6-liter V6 is rated at 20/30.

Which 2016 Cadillac ATS trim should I buy?

The 2016 Cadillac ATS is offered in 7 trim levels: Standard, Luxury, Performance, Premium, Standard, Luxury, and Premium.

Here's the short version:

• Standard: This is the entry point if you want the ATS experience at the lowest cost, but it’s the most stripped-down way to get the car and leaves you with the least equipment.
• Luxury: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds more comfort and convenience without pushing you into the highest-priced versions.
• Performance: This trim is the better pick if you want a more engaging setup and access to more available equipment, including safety and convenience upgrades.
• Premium: This is the most fully equipped route and the one to target if you want the strongest feature content, including Magnetic Ride Control and the most upscale feel.

Safety content notes that a heads-up display is available in Performance and Premium models, so those trims have an equipment advantage if that feature matters to you.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Cadillac ATS?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 279 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.24% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 47.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,089, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Cadillac ATS's resale value?

The current average of $11,089 sits slightly below last year's $12,493.

That decline suggests the ATS has become more affordable for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may face a softer pricing environment than owners saw a year ago. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you can help protect value, but the market is still rewarding shoppers more than sellers right now. Listings with cleaner histories and stronger equipment should be easier to move later than rougher examples.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Cadillac ATS safe?

The Cadillac ATS has earned a 5-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and a Superior rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes airbags, disc brakes, traction control, and antilock braking. Available driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring, forward collision alerts, automatic seatbelt tightening, lane-departure warnings, and cross-traffic alerts. A heads-up display is available in Performance and Premium models. That said, you should still verify which safety options are actually installed on any used example you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2016 Cadillac ATS or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 47.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.24% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 update adds a new 3.6-liter V6 and Apple CarPlay.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $10,311, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $11,089 average.
• It reflects Cadillac’s reinvention with a more deliberate, thoughtfully executed character.

The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2016 if you want the better-equipped, more modern version of the ATS with the updated engine and infotainment improvements. If your priority is simply spending less, the 2015 can make sense as a lower-cost alternative, especially if you find a clean, well-kept example.

How does the 2016 Cadillac ATS compare to the 2016 BMW 3 Series?

Our experts score the 2016 Cadillac ATS 7.5/10 and the 2016 BMW 3 Series 7.5/10.

The ATS gives you stronger standard horsepower and a more affordable average used price, while the 3 Series offers better fuel economy and a larger pool of listings to shop. The Cadillac also has a lower accident-free share, so you may need to be more selective about condition and history. If you want the more engaging-feeling domestic luxury sedan, the ATS is compelling; if you want broader inventory and better efficiency, the BMW has the edge.
