Is the 2016 Cadillac ATS a good car?

Generally — the 2016 Cadillac ATS earns a 4.2/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating, which points to a well-liked compact luxury sedan with broad appeal. Owners repeatedly praise its superb handling, smooth ride, and tech features, while the expert notes highlight competent chassis tuning and impeccable road manners. For you, that means the ATS makes the most sense if you want a polished, rewarding-to-drive sedan with a strong emphasis on driving feel and modern infotainment. 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there’s still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Cadillac ATS reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car that feels good to live with over time, especially because buyers consistently mention the smooth ride, strong driving dynamics, and overall value. The expert notes also describe the ATS as a competent, well-executed sedan with a powertrain that improves the car’s day-to-day appeal. Cadillac’s first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps lower early ownership friction.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the car has been maintained well enough to avoid compounding interior and infotainment annoyances.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Cadillac ATS?

At 46.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a car with a lower price or a higher trim level. Pay close attention to signs of prior bodywork, interior wear, and infotainment behavior, since owner feedback points to cabin and system frustrations. If you’re comparing multiple listings, condition should matter as much as trim and mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.5-liter setup is limited to Standard or Luxury trims and rear-wheel drive, while the 2.0-liter turbo adds Standard, Luxury, Performance, and Premium trims with rear- or front-wheel drive. The 3.6-liter V6 is offered in Luxury, Performance, and Premium trims only, and the Premium trim adds Magnetic Ride Control.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a 2.0-liter turbo four, or a 3.6-liter V6. The 2.5-liter is the weakest choice, the turbo four is the best compromise, and the V6 brings the strongest power and linear response.
• Safety package: The ATS comes standard with airbags, disc brakes, traction control, and antilock braking. Optional equipment includes blind-spot monitoring, forward collision alerts, automatic seatbelt tightening, lane-departure warnings, and cross-traffic alerts.
• Infotainment: Apple CarPlay is part of the 2016 update, and the system centers on an 8-inch touchscreen. The setup is improved, but the steering-wheel controls can be confusing.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-liter four-cylinder returns 21 mpg city and 33 highway, the 2.0-liter turbo returns 21/30 in rear-wheel-drive automatic form and 20/28 with all-wheel drive, and the 3.6-liter V6 returns 20/30.

Which 2016 Cadillac ATS trim should I buy?

The 2016 Cadillac ATS is offered in 7 trim levels: Standard, Luxury, Performance, Premium, Standard, Luxury, Performance, and Premium.

Here's the short version:

• Standard: This is the entry point if you want the ATS experience at the lowest cost, but it’s also the trim where you’ll feel the most feature restraint. It makes sense if you care most about the chassis and styling and less about extras.
• Luxury: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a more upscale feel without pushing you all the way to the top of the range. If you want the ATS to feel properly premium without overspending, start here.
• Performance: This trim is the right step if you want a more engaging setup and are willing to pay for a richer equipment mix. It’s a good fit if you want the ATS to lean harder into its driving character.
• Premium: This is the trim to target if you want the most complete ATS experience, especially because it can include Magnetic Ride Control and the available heads-up display. It’s the best choice if you want the strongest blend of comfort, tech, and capability.

The safety package is optional, so make sure the specific car you’re considering has the driver-assistance features you want.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Cadillac ATS?

The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with patience and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 259 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.93% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 46.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,631, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Cadillac ATS's resale value?

The current average of $11,725 sits slightly below last year's $12,465.

That decline suggests the ATS has become more affordable for buyers, which can make it harder for future sellers to command a premium unless the car is especially clean or well equipped. If you own one, condition and trim will matter a lot when it’s time to sell. Cars with stronger equipment and better maintenance records should hold buyer interest more effectively than rougher examples.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Cadillac ATS safe?

The Cadillac ATS earns a Superior rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The ATS comes standard with airbags, disc brakes, traction control, and antilock braking. Optional safety equipment includes blind-spot monitoring, forward collision alerts, automatic seatbelt tightening, lane-departure warnings, and cross-traffic alerts. Should I buy a 2016 Cadillac ATS or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 46.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.93% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds a new 3.6-liter V6 with cylinder deactivation and a more modern infotainment setup.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $10,693, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $11,725 average.
• It represents Cadillac’s reinvention with a more deliberate, thoughtfully executed character.

The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped and more modern ATS, the 2016 is the stronger pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the better value path, especially if you can find one in clean condition.
