How much does the 2016 BMW X1 cost?

There are 601 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2016 BMW X1 a good car?

Yes — the 2016 BMW X1 earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Performance.

It stands out as a small luxury SUV that feels polished behind the wheel, and it was redesigned for 2016 as BMW shifted it to a front-wheel-drive-based platform. The overview also frames it as especially relevant in a growing compact luxury SUV segment, with appeal that is strong but not unlimited.

32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2016 BMW X1 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The overview and expert notes point to a vehicle that feels well sorted and thoughtfully engineered, with the expert review emphasizing strong driving dynamics, responsive steering, and solid brake feel. The performance write-up also describes the engine as sprightly and smooth once warmed up, which supports the impression of a well-executed powertrain.

The cost-effectiveness commentary makes clear that many desirable features were optional, so used buyers should pay close attention to equipment levels and maintenance history. For long-term ownership, the biggest risk is ending up with a lightly equipped example that needs more upkeep than its asking price suggests.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW X1?

At 59.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on condition, equipment completeness, and whether the car has the options you want, since many desirable features were not standard.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin and exterior presentation are a big part of the X1’s appeal, with clean styling, soft-touch lower dashboard panels, and optional stitched brown leather trim helping it feel like a proper luxury SUV. Base examples can feel sparse because many comfort and convenience items were optional.
• Powertrain: The 2016 X1 uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder rated at 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is standard, and the engine is described as quick off the line, smooth once warm, and efficient for the class.
• Safety package: The available driver-assistance setup includes lane-departure warning, forward-collision alert, auto braking with pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist are not included.
• Infotainment: The system includes clear navigation graphics, handwriting recognition, single-string voice commands, and an available split-screen display. The tech setup also includes a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo, telematics features, and a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The X1 is rated at 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway, and the expert review notes an observed average of 26 mpg over 300 miles.

Which 2016 BMW X1 trim should I buy?

The 2016 BMW X1 is offered in 1 trim level: xDrive28i.

Here's the short version:

The xDrive28i is the trim to shop because it is the only one listed and it already brings the core X1 formula: the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, standard all-wheel drive, and the sharp driving character that defines this model year. It suits you best if you want the X1’s polished road manners and compact luxury feel without needing to sort through multiple trim ladders.

The safety package includes lane-departure warning, forward-collision alert, and auto braking with pedestrian detection, while adaptive cruise control is available and blind-spot monitoring is not.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW X1?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough deal activity to make comparison worthwhile.

• Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 601 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.05% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 59.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,465, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 BMW X1's resale value?

The current average of $11,586 sits slightly below last year's $11,951.

That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to resell later, the current trend means your upside is more likely to come from buying well and choosing a clean, well-equipped example than from expecting appreciation.

Because the year-over-year change is negative, future sellers should expect value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment. A well-kept X1 with desirable options should be easier to move than a stripped or poorly documented example.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 BMW X1 safe?

The 2016 BMW X1 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, indicating Good scores in all five crashworthiness tests and an Advanced or Superior front crash prevention result.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The available safety suite includes lane-departure warning, forward-collision alert, auto braking with pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist are not included, so you should not assume every driver-assistance feature is present on every example.

Should I buy a 2016 BMW X1 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.05% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 redesign brought a new front-wheel-drive-based platform and a more polished luxury-SUV feel.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of driving polish, modernized design, and current market value, the 2016 is the right starting point. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can shop carefully for a lower-priced example, but you should be more selective about condition and equipment because many desirable features were optional.

How does the 2016 BMW X1 compare to the 2016 Audi Q3?

Our experts score the 2016 BMW X1 7/10 and the 2016 Audi Q3 6/10.

The X1 has the stronger expert score, the better city and highway fuel economy, and more listings to shop from. The Q3 has a slightly lower average used price and a higher accident-free share, so it may appeal if you want to prioritize a cleaner listing pool over the X1’s sharper driving character.
