The 2016 X1 is framed as a compact luxury SUV that feels polished behind the wheel, and the redesign gave it a more upscale look and a more refined cabin than the previous version. The performance writeup also points to a turbocharged engine that delivers full torque just off idle, which supports the sense that the X1 should feel eager in everyday use. What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW X1?

At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you get too far into the process, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on any car that looks especially well optioned or unusually cheap. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and evidence of prior bodywork, since the market includes a meaningful number of cars with accident history.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The X1 is presented as a luxury SUV with a cabin that is more refined than the previous version, but many desirable features were optional, so you should pay close attention to equipment differences on individual listings.
• Powertrain: The 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder makes 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, with all-wheel drive standard and fuel economy rated at 22 mpg city/32 highway.
• Safety package: The available driver-assistance setup includes lane-departure warning, forward-collision alert, and auto braking with pedestrian detection; adaptive cruise control is also available, while blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist are not.
• Infotainment: The navigation system includes clear graphics, voice commands, handwriting recognition, and an available split-screen display; the car also offers telematics, a head-up display, and a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo.
• Fuel efficiency: The X1 is rated at 22 mpg city/32 highway, and the expert review says it averaged 26 mpg over 300 miles.

Which 2016 BMW X1 trim should I buy?

The 2016 BMW X1 is offered in 1 trim level: xDrive28i.

Here's the short version:

The xDrive28i is the only trim, so your decision is really about finding the best-equipped example rather than choosing between versions. It brings the X1’s turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, standard all-wheel drive, and the sharp driving feel that the expert review praises, while also leaving room for a wide range of options that can materially change the ownership experience.

The safety content notes that the X1 was later named a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS, with Good scores in all five crashworthiness tests and an Advanced or Superior front crash prevention rating.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW X1?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.

• Deal availability: 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 584 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.22% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,465, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 BMW X1's resale value?

The current average of $11,652 sits slightly below last year's $12,040.

That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right number today. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range and keep the car in strong condition, you may be better positioned when it comes time to resell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2016 BMW X1 or consider a different year?

• 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.22% compared with last year.

The bottom line: The 2016 X1 makes the most sense if you want this redesigned generation’s stronger styling and driving feel, especially now that prices have eased. If you’re more price-sensitive, focus on the cleanest, best-documented example rather than stretching for extra equipment you may not need.
