CarGurus Analysis: 2016 BMW M4

Summary
With 211 currently listed for sale and an average price of $42,443, 29.4% of 2016 BMW M4s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 BMW M4 5 / 5 stars.
52.6% of 2016 M4 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW M4 stands out as a compact high-performance coupe that blends everyday usability with serious speed. It uses a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six with 425 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, and BMW paired that engine with rear-wheel drive and either a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission. The car also brings the kind of chassis hardware expected of an M model, including an Active M Differential, special M compound brakes, and available Adaptive M Suspension. Standard equipment was generous for the price, with leather upholstery, climate control, LED headlights, and 18-inch alloy wheels.
What makes the 2016 model especially distinctive is the way BMW sharpened it further that year. BMW added the M4 Competition Package as an option, bringing 20-inch alloy wheels, an additional 19 horsepower, uprated springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, black chrome tail pipes, and Shadow Line exterior trim details. That gives buyers a clear path to a more focused version without leaving the core M4 formula behind. The car’s two-door body styles, carbon-fiber roof on coupe versions, and pumped-up M Division bodywork also help it look and feel special.
At the same time, the 2016 BMW M4 is not without compromises. It is a high-end performance car, so running costs and purchase prices can be significant, and the convertible’s boot is small. Still, for buyers who want a fast, well-equipped, rear-drive sports car with strong handling and a manual transmission option, the 2016 M4 has a lot of appeal.

Very reliable, quick, and stylish. Gets a lot of attention, even from haters, which there are a few. With Xdrive and launch control it catapults from the intersection. Very quiet. Brakes are awesome from high speed (M package). The rear hatch allows for a ton of room. Highly recommend.

Is the 2016 BMW M4 a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 5/5, which is a strong signal that you may be happy with it if you want a compact high-performance coupe that still works as an everyday car. Is the 2016 BMW M4 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable in the ways that matter most to enthusiasts, especially when it comes to the manual transmission and the overall driving experience. The repeated praise for strong braking and balanced handling suggests a car that owners feel confident living with over time. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the rating and more about making sure the specific car has been maintained properly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW M4?
At 53.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean cars from those with prior damage or repeated claims. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on body condition, panel alignment, brakes, suspension, and any signs of hard use. Because this is a performance car, you should pay close attention to how the car has been driven and whether any modifications or repairs affect its condition.

What is the 2016 BMW M4's resale value?
The current average of $42,509 sits slightly below last year's $42,519.
That small decline suggests the market has been stable rather than volatile, which is helpful if you plan to resell later. A steady price pattern can make it easier to estimate future value because you are not dealing with sharp swings in demand. Strong owner satisfaction also helps support buyer interest when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW M4 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
If you want a used M4 with strong owner approval, steady pricing, and a clear performance-first personality, the 2016 model is a solid primary choice. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than chasing the lowest sticker price alone.
