CarGurus Analysis: 2016 BMW 5 Series

Summary
With 840 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,496.00, 32.9% of 2016 BMW 5 Series for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 BMW 5 Series 5 / 5 stars.
58.5% of 2016 BMW 5 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW 5 Series stands out as a midsize luxury sedan that still puts a premium on driving feel, even as it leans more toward comfort than the sharper 5 Series models of the past. In this generation, BMW offered a broad spread of powertrains, including four-cylinder, six-cylinder, V8, diesel, and hybrid options, so buyers could choose between efficiency and stronger performance. The car also brought a lot of technology to the table, including BMW’s iDrive system, a Parking Assist feature that could steer the car into parallel spaces, and available active-safety equipment such as adaptive cruise control, surround view cameras, and a head-up display.
For 2016 specifically, the 5 Series carried over without major changes, which means it remained a well-equipped, polished sedan rather than a radically updated one. That makes it appealing to shoppers who want a refined used luxury car with a strong reputation for quality and a wide range of available features. At the same time, it is not the simplest car to own: the source notes that the technology can be tough to master, the trunk is small-ish, and the car is pricey and complex. Even so, the 2016 BMW 5 Series remains distinctive for blending luxury, performance, and a deep feature set in a package that still feels like a true BMW sedan.

The bmw 550i is just plain excellent. I purchased mine about 5 hours away from home so I had a pretty proper test immediately. It’s very powerful and extremely comfortable which is exactly what I want from a luxury vehicle.

How much does the 2016 BMW 5 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,563 |
| Year-Round Low | $12,275.41 |
| Year-Round High | $13,635.24 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,524 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.11% |
Prices have softened 7.11% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 863 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $12,275.41, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2016 BMW 5 Series earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Drivers consistently praise its powerful performance, luxurious comfort, and wide range of features. The model also stands out for its smooth driving experience and available M Sport suspension, which helps it fit buyers who want a refined sedan with a more engaging feel.
If you want a midsize luxury sedan that balances comfort, performance, and technology, this model year fits that use case well. 27.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights dependable performance, strong engines, and a smooth driving experience. Reviewers also point to the car’s luxurious comfort and broad feature set as reasons they continue to value it over time.
For used buyers, that suggests the biggest long-term ownership risk is less about day-to-day satisfaction and more about choosing a well-maintained example with a clean history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW 5 Series?
At 58.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether the car has any accident or damage records. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can check for wear, repair quality, and any signs of neglected maintenance.
Because this is a complex luxury sedan, focus on overall condition rather than just mileage. A clean, well-documented car is the safer buy than a cheaper example with unclear service or body history.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW 5 Series?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 27.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 863 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.11% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,275.41, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $12,563 sits slightly below last year's $13,524.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, it also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, maintenance history, and how well the car presents against similar listings.
Because this model still attracts shoppers looking for a premium driving experience, a clean example with strong documentation should hold buyer interest better than a neglected one. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 27.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.11% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $16,979, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $12,563 average.
- It brings a full redesign with a new chassis, updated engines, and more advanced technology.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2016 is the stronger starting point because it offers a lower average price and solid owner satisfaction. If you want the newer redesign and are willing to pay more, the 2017 is the better upgrade path; price-sensitive buyers should stay focused on the 2016.
