Why it stands out
The 2016 Acura MDX stands out for putting safety, athleticism, and refinement at the center of its appeal. Those are the primary selling points called out for this model, and they help explain why it has long been positioned as a luxury SUV with a polished, upscale character.
For 2016, the MDX also gained a new 9-speed automatic transmission, which is one of the key updates tied to this model year. That change gives the SUV a more modern mechanical setup, though the source also notes that the improvement did not necessarily make the vehicle more appealing overall. Owner feedback reinforces the MDX’s strengths, with praise for its comfortable ride, effective safety features, overall performance, advanced features, and spacious interior. At the same time, some drivers have reported transmission shifting issues, which is worth keeping in mind for shoppers who value smooth operation above all else.

I chose this specific trim (Elite model) for comfort and well… the wide screen entertainment system for my younger kids. For a 8 year old car it drives amazingly. I have driven Hondas, Toyotas Fords but this might be the best I have owned.

Yes a great value and w/ Acura watch this is totally incredible for a smaller suv. Having the Acura 4yr. Warranty w/50K miles. This has the 3.5 Fwd power everywhere and power outlets are all over as well. Leather is beautiful it’s got more buttons it can be overwhelming but it’s greatly appreciated.

Owners consistently praise the comfortable ride, effective safety features, overall performance, advanced features, and spacious interior. That lines up well with the MDX’s family-friendly use case, especially if you want a luxury SUV that emphasizes comfort and practicality. Even so, some owners mention transmission shifting concerns, so the driving experience may matter more to you than the feature list alone.
With 33.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market opportunity to make this a worthwhile model year to shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also points to a vehicle that many drivers find dependable, trouble-free, and worth counting on over time. The expert review adds that the MDX has historically been very reliable, even while noting that newer technology has affected perceptions of quality and appeal. The powertrain commentary also suggests the main ownership concern is less about durability and more about day-to-day drivability, especially around the transmission.
For used buyers, the biggest long-term risk is that advanced features and transmission behavior may affect satisfaction more than basic mechanical dependability.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Acura MDX?
At 61.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has any accident record or incomplete service history. Pay close attention to how the transmission behaves on a test drive, since smooth shifting is one of the most important condition checks on this model year. It also makes sense to confirm that the safety and tech features work as expected, because this MDX’s appeal depends heavily on its equipment.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base setup lets you choose whether you want the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system, but the cabin is described as simple and plain, and the feature set is more limited before option packages are added.
- Powertrain: A 3.5-liter V6 makes 290 horsepower and is paired with a new 9-speed automatic transmission for 2016; the setup is meant to improve fuel economy, but the review notes delays, lurching, and less satisfying behavior than the previous transmission.
- Safety package: AcuraWatch Plus adds adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, and road-departure mitigation. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert requires the Technology or Advance Package.
- Infotainment: The MDX uses a dual-display setup, and the Technology Package adds navigation with real-time traffic, a premium sound system with HD Radio, and AcuraLink services. The Entertainment Package adds a rear-seat entertainment system and a 110-volt power outlet, while the Advance Package expands the entertainment display to 16.2 inches.
- Fuel efficiency: The SH-AWD model is rated at 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. With the Advance Package and Idle Stop, ratings rise to 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.
Which 2016 Acura MDX trim should I buy?
The 2016 Acura MDX is offered in 4 trim levels: base, Technology, Advance, and Entertainment.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: This is the most stripped-down version, and it lacks the added navigation, premium audio, and broader driver-assistance content that come with the higher packages.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Technology Package is the best value for many shoppers because it adds navigation with real-time traffic, a premium sound system, AcuraLink services, and more safety-related technology.
- Premium/top trim: The Advance Package adds Idle Stop, remote engine start, ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, and front and rear parking assistance sensors, making it the most feature-rich choice for comfort and convenience.
- Off-road trim: Not applicable here.
The Technology and Advance packages also bring blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, so they’re the trims to focus on if safety tech matters most to you.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Acura MDX?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to shop carefully and compare listings rather than rush.
- Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,039 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.00% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,445.23, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Acura MDX's resale value?
The current average of $14,828 sits slightly below last year's $15,944.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. Even so, the MDX’s strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal as a family-oriented luxury SUV should help support demand over time. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in good condition, it should remain reasonably attractive in the used market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX safe?
earns 5-star crash-test ratings from the federal government in every single assessment, accompanied by a 4-star rollover resistance rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the MDX top ratings across the board, plus an Advanced rating for its ability to avoid a frontal-impact collision in the first place.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
AcuraWatch Plus adds adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, and road-departure mitigation. If you want blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, you need the Technology or Advance Package, and those packages also include rain-sensing wipers.
Should I buy a 2016 Acura MDX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.00% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 model year adds a new 9-speed automatic transmission and available AcuraWatch Plus safety tech.
The bottom line: If you want a well-equipped luxury SUV with strong safety credentials, solid owner satisfaction, and a softer price than last year, the 2016 MDX is a sensible target. If you’re especially sensitive to transmission smoothness or want to maximize value, you should compare it carefully against nearby years and prioritize the cleanest, best-documented example you can find.
