What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI?

At 59% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then focus your inspection on signs of prior damage, repair quality, and overall wear. Because this is a performance-oriented hatchback, it’s smart to pay close attention to how the car drives, how the interior has held up, and whether maintenance has been kept up consistently. If you’re comparing multiple listings, condition and documentation should matter more than mileage alone.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S trim is the only trim shown with the iconic plaid interior, while the SE adds automatic headlights and wipers, keyless ignition and entry, a rear-view camera, and an upgraded Fender stereo. The special-order-only Autobahn adds navigation, a 10-way power driver’s seat, and dual-zone automatic climate control.
• Powertrain: The GTI uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 210 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, and the Performance Package adds another 10 hp plus larger brakes and an electronically controlled mechanical differential.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance Package adds forward-collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warnings, park assist and pilot, and adaptive cruise control. Base cars do not include that package.
• Infotainment: The touchscreen measures 5.8 inches and the system does not include smartphone integration. The base setup includes Bluetooth, satellite radio, and iPod integration.

Should I buy a 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2015 if:

• 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.57% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2015 brings a big bump in power, a new chassis, and revised suspension tuning.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $12,940, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $12,276 average.
• It adds a more entertaining driving personality and stronger owner praise for fuel economy and practicality.

The bottom line: If you want the lower-priced, well-supported version of the GTI formula, the 2015 is the better starting point. If you’re willing to spend more for the next model year’s added polish and broader appeal, the 2016 is worth a look.

How does the 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI compare to the 2015 Ford Focus?

Our experts score the 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI 8.3/10 and the 2015 Ford Focus 6.3/10. The GTI is the stronger choice if you want a more engaging performance hatch with better overall balance and a higher expert score. The Focus is cheaper on the used market and has more listings, but it gives up power and overall appeal. If you care most about driving enjoyment and all-around polish, the GTI is the better pick.
