CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 68 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,537, 36.8% of 2015 Toyota 4Runner listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Toyota 4Runner 4.43 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
94.1% of 2015 Toyota 4Runner listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a rugged SUV aimed squarely at drivers who want serious off-road ability. In hard-core off-road use, it excels, especially on rock-strewn paths, and it also does a good job of carrying lots of stuff. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who value capability and utility over everyday polish.
Its strengths come with clear tradeoffs, though. The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is described as having too many compromises to serve well as a day-to-day runabout for ferrying little kids, and it is not presented as a good family vehicle. Owner feedback also points to a smooth ride, comfortable seating, strong reliability, and a rear window that opens like a regular window, while noting that fuel efficiency is not among its strong points.

Horrible shaking steering wheel, leather wants to tear, no space, terrible gas mileage.

I absolutely love the feel of the vehicle, the seats are very comfortable in front and back. The front seat feels snug which makes me feel safer while driving and the technology is top notch. The backup camera is very useful and overall the vehicle is a very smooth drive offering great off road capabilities

I’m so happy with my 4Runner it’s the perfect size, a comfortable ride, easy to park and I feel is quite comparable to my Tahoe I had before it. It’s better on gas and I like the more reliable name.

| Year-Round Low | $21,381 |
| Year-Round High | $22,327 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,214 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.17% |
Prices have softened 3.17% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,113 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Generally — 4.43/5 from owners and 7.33/10 from expert testing point to a model that resonates with shoppers who value capability. The 4Runner’s appeal centers on its rugged off-road focus, strong utility for hauling gear, and a comfortable ride that owners repeatedly praise. It is best suited to you if you want a true SUV with serious trail ability rather than a soft, family-first crossover. Market availability is healthy, with 32.4% of listings rated as good or great deals.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also highlights strong reliability, dependable day-to-day ownership, and a long-lasting character that many buyers value in a used SUV. Expert commentary reinforces that impression by describing the 4Runner as a vehicle with impressive reliability ratings and a reputation for holding up well over time. Toyota also includes free maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles, which can help reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a hard-used example may have seen more trail abuse than its mileage alone suggests.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
At 57.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of the frame, suspension, tires, and underbody for signs of off-road wear or collision repair. Because this SUV is often bought for rugged use, condition matters as much as mileage. Pay close attention to how the drivetrain, brakes, and steering feel on a test drive, since those systems can reveal whether the truck has been used hard.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 is the entry point and comes with rear-wheel drive, while the Trail adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, selectable driving modes, Crawl Control, and Downhill Assist Control. The Limited leans more toward comfort with leather seats, ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a JBL audio system, keyless entry with push-button start, parking sensors, and Safety Connect. The Trail is the most trail-focused choice, while the Limited is the most comfort-oriented.
- Powertrain: The 4Runner uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. It is adequate rather than quick, and the transmission can take a while to downshift when you want more passing power.
- Safety package: Every 4Runner gets a reversing camera and Hill Start Assist Control, and 4WD-equipped models add Active Traction Control and Downhill Assist Control. The Trail adds Crawl Control and Multi-terrain Select, while the Limited includes Safety Connect. Blind-spot monitoring is not part of the package.
- Infotainment: The standard system uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen with navigation, upgraded speakers, Entune App Suite smartphone connectivity, and a USB 2.0 port. The larger 7-inch screen is exclusive to the Limited.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the 4Runner returns 18 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle recorded 16.8 mpg in real-world use.
Which 2015 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 4 trim levels: SR5, Trail, TRD Pro and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the starting point, and it makes sense if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness at the lowest entry price. The standard rear-wheel-drive setup is the weakest part of the trim, so it is best for buyers who plan to add the optional 4WD-related equipment or who mainly want the 4Runner shape and utility.
- Trail: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the hardware that makes the 4Runner feel genuinely trail-ready: standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, selectable terrain modes, Crawl Control, and Downhill Assist Control. If you want the most capability for the money, this is the one to target.
- TRD Pro: This is the most specialized off-road version, with TRD Bilstein shocks, rear remote reservoirs, TRD front springs, a TRD aluminum skid plate, matte-black 17-inch wheels, beefy off-road tires, and a higher ride height. Choose it if you want the most aggressive factory setup and are willing to pay for it.
- Limited: This is the comfort pick, with ventilated leather front seats, dual-zone climate control, a 15-speaker JBL system, keyless entry with push-button start, parking sensors, and Safety Connect. It is the right choice if you care more about daily comfort than trail hardware.
Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited, so that trim has the clearest safety-tech advantage.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to reward careful shopping.
- Deal availability: 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,113 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.17% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,381, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $21,510 sits slightly below last year's $22,214.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can help you enter ownership at a lower cost. For a future seller, the recent decline means you should be realistic about near-term appreciation, especially if you buy at the top of the range. Even so, the 4Runner’s reputation for durability and utility helps support demand among shoppers who specifically want a rugged SUV.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner earns a Poor rating from IIHS and a three-star overall rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety equipment includes a reversing camera and Hill Start Assist Control, and 4WD-equipped versions add Active Traction Control and Downhill Assist Control. The Trail trim adds Crawl Control and Multi-terrain Select, while the Limited gets Safety Connect. A blind-spot monitoring system is not included, and the safety commentary also flags the 4Runner’s rollover susceptibility because of its high center of gravity.
Should I buy a 2015 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.17% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It is a rugged, body-on-frame SUV with strong off-road ability and lots of cargo utility.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $20,391, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $21,510 average.
- It blends traditional SUV toughness with comfortable daily driving.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $23,901, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $21,510 average.
- It adds cell-phone navigation and more towing capability.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of capability and current-market value, the 2015 is the right starting point. If your priority is saving money, the 2014 is the better budget play. If you want a slightly newer version and can pay more, the 2016 is worth a look for its added convenience and towing upgrades.
