CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 93 currently listed for sale near Nashville, TN and an average price of $20,800.00, 23.7% of 2015 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Toyota 4Runner 4.43 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
68.8% of 2015 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a rugged SUV aimed squarely at drivers who value off-road ability and utility over everyday polish. In expert testing, it was described as built for hard-core off-road enthusiasts and as excelling on rock-strewn paths. It was also praised for carrying lots of stuff, which adds to its appeal for buyers who need a vehicle that can handle gear as well as rough terrain.
That capability comes with tradeoffs, though. The same test-drive summary noted that it makes too many compromises to serve well as a day-to-day runabout for ferrying little kids, and the broader impression is that its strengths are tied closely to its adventurous mission. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal by pointing to a smooth ride, comfortable seating, strong reliability, and the rear window that opens like a regular window, while also noting that it is not the most fuel-efficient choice in its class.

I absolutely love the feel of the vehicle, the seats are very comfortable in front and back. The front seat feels snug which makes me feel safer while driving and the technology is top notch. The backup camera is very useful and overall the vehicle is a very smooth drive offering great off road capabilities

I’m so happy with my 4Runner it’s the perfect size, a comfortable ride, easy to park and I feel is quite comparable to my Tahoe I had before it. It’s better on gas and I like the more reliable name.

Owner feedback repeatedly points to strong reliability, and the broader ownership picture suggests you can count on it for long-term use if you buy a well-kept example. The expert testing also describes it as a durable, truck-like SUV built for demanding use, which reinforces the sense that it is meant to hold up over time.
Toyota’s maintenance coverage helps early ownership costs, with the first two years or 25,000 miles covered. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the model’s basic toughness and more about how hard a previous owner may have used it.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
At 58.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has seen trail use or heavy-duty family hauling. Focus on condition details that matter for a rugged SUV: suspension wear, underbody damage, tire condition, and signs of neglected maintenance.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SR5 is rear-wheel drive, while the Trail adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, selectable driving modes, Crawl Control, and Downhill Assist Control. The Limited shifts toward comfort with ventilated leather seats, dual-zone climate control, a JBL audio system, keyless entry with push-button start, parking sensors, and Safety Connect.
- Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, and the 5-speed automatic can be slow to downshift when you want extra passing power. Fuel economy is described as poor, so efficiency should not be a priority if you choose this SUV.
- Safety package: A standard reversing camera is included, but the 4Runner lacks many modern active safety features. Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited.
- Infotainment: The standard system uses a 6.1-inch display with navigation, upgraded speakers, Entune App Suite smartphone connectivity, and a USB 2.0 port. The larger 7-inch screen is exclusive to the Limited.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says combined fuel economy is 18 mpg, and real-world testing returned 16.8 mpg.
Which 2015 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 4 trim levels: SR5, Trail, TRD Pro and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point, but the rear-wheel-drive setup makes it the least compelling choice if you want the 4Runner’s core capability. It makes sense only if you are shopping strictly on price and plan to add the optional Premium Package for more comfort and tech.
- Trail: This is the best-value trim if you want the 4Runner’s off-road hardware without jumping to the top of the range. Standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, Crawl Control, Multi-terrain Select, and Downhill Assist Control make it the most capability-focused choice for serious trail use.
- TRD Pro: This is the most specialized off-road version, with TRD Bilstein shocks, rear remote reservoirs, TRD front springs, a TRD aluminum skid plate, and off-road tires. Choose it if you want the most aggressive hardware and styling.
- Limited: This is the comfort-first trim, with ventilated leather seats, a 15-speaker JBL audio system, push-button start, parking sensors, and Safety Connect. It suits you best if you want the most upscale 4Runner experience and spend more time on pavement.
Safety Connect is available only on the Limited, so that trim has the clearest safety-tech advantage.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers: there is enough inventory to shop around, but the best examples still deserve quick action.
- Deal availability: 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,050 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.02% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,394.57, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $21,945 sits slightly below last year's $22,398.
That price movement suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now if you plan to keep the SUV for several years. For a future seller, the current dip means your upside depends more on condition, mileage, and trim than on broad market appreciation.
The 4Runner’s reputation for reliability and utility should help support demand, especially among buyers who want a rugged SUV that can do more than a crossover. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should remain easier to move than neglected ones.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
The 4Runner offers a standard reversing camera, but it lacks many of the latest active safety features, including blind-spot monitoring. Toyota reserves Safety Connect for the Limited, so lower trims miss out on that added emergency-assistance service.
The safety caveat is important here: the expert testing specifically calls out crash-test and rollover-resistance concerns, so you should treat safety as a relative weakness for this model year. If safety tech is a top priority, you should compare it carefully against newer or more modern alternatives.
Should I buy a 2015 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.02% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It is built for hard-core off-road enthusiasts and excels on rock-strewn paths.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $20,468, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $21,945 average.
- It blends ruggedness with everyday usability.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,401, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $21,945 average.
- It adds cell-phone navigation and higher towing capacity.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of off-road capability and value, the 2015 is the right target year. If your budget is tighter, the 2014 gives you a lower entry price with similar rugged character. If you want a bit more capability and can spend more, the 2016 is the better upgrade path.
