Why it stands out
The 2015 Subaru Outback stands out as a redesigned wagon-like crossover that is bigger and better than before. Its appeal starts with standard all-wheel drive, which gives it capability in a wide variety of driving situations, and it does so without penalizing buyers in terms of fuel economy. That combination makes it a practical choice for shoppers who want utility and confidence on the road without giving up efficiency.
It also offers the kind of everyday usefulness many buyers want from a crossover SUV. The available owner feedback points to a solid ride, a luxurious feel, impressive safety features, ample cargo space, and strong fuel efficiency. A common drawback mentioned by drivers is the lack of navigation, which may matter to buyers who want that feature built in.

My mother recently purchased a brand new Outback in 2023 and from the drives I’ve taken in it, all of the safety features and the body style, center of gravity and comfort led me to look for used Outbacks for my next purchase. I was not disappointed in the 2015 and I will have a hard time wanting to sit in any other car without a 6-cylinder engine. The Limited trim is perfectly comfortable: the same EyeSight features and safety focuses accomplish the same as a brand new year model but with a touch of “retro” flair in the (arguably dated but, I don’t mind) screen, the accent lighting in the cab and less is more approach of the interiors.

| Year-Round Low | $10,621 |
| Year-Round High | $11,368 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,362 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.19% |
Prices have softened 5.19% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,403 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2015 Subaru Outback earns a 4.9/5 user rating and an 8.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its solid ride, luxurious feel, impressive safety features, ample cargo space, and fuel efficiency. That lines up well with the Outback’s practical, wagon-like crossover setup and standard all-wheel drive, which make it a strong fit if you want everyday utility and confidence in a wide range of driving situations.
The market also shows healthy interest, with 33.7% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a reliable, dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers especially appreciating the Outback’s solid ride, safety, cargo space, and fuel efficiency. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Outback is built around a strong, confidence-inspiring all-wheel-drive formula, and Subaru’s safety-focused engineering adds to the sense that it’s designed for long-term use.
The cost-effectiveness notes also suggest that Subaru’s ownership experience is generally steady rather than troublesome, though you should still expect used-car wear and verify maintenance history carefully.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Subaru Outback?
At 59.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible cosmetic wear. Focus on condition, prior damage, and whether the car’s safety and convenience features are functioning as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 2.5i comes with basic 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, but it does include a rear-view camera, Bluetooth connectivity, a touchscreen interface for the climate control and audio systems, and a roof rack with crossbars. The 2.5i Premium adds 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, fog lamps and a dual-zone automatic climate control system. The 2.5i Limited adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate, heated rear seats, active fog lights that point in the direction you’re steering, a blind-spot detection system, a rear cross-traffic detection system, and lane-change assist technology. The 3.6R Limited adds a 6-cylinder engine and Xenon headlamps.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 175 hp and uses a CVT, while the 3.6R brings a more powerful 256-hp 6-cylinder option. The 2.5i is efficient enough for the class, but acceleration can feel modest.
- Safety package: EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses two cameras to monitor the road ahead, warn you of danger, and brake the car to a full stop if needed. It is optional on Premium and Limited trim levels. The Rear Vehicle Detection System, which includes blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist, is optional on Premium models and standard on Limited models.
- Infotainment: The Starlink interface includes Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, hands-free calling, music streaming, mobile apps, and CD playback. The available navigation system uses a 7-inch touchscreen and supports swipe and pinch gestures.
- Fuel efficiency: The Outback is rated at 28 mpg in combined driving, and the expert evaluation notes that real-world fuel economy can fall short of expectations.
Which 2015 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2015 Subaru Outback is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the value play if you want the Outback’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. You still get the rear-view camera, Bluetooth, touchscreen climate/audio controls, and roof rails, so it covers the basics well.
- 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds heated front seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, fog lamps, alloy wheels, and dual-zone climate control without jumping all the way to the top.
- 2.5i Limited: This is the trim to choose if you want the most complete feature set in the 2.5-liter lineup. It adds the power liftgate, heated rear seats, active fog lights, and the key safety upgrades, making it the most well-rounded choice.
- 3.6R Limited: Choose this if you want the stronger 6-cylinder engine and don’t mind paying for it. It keeps the Limited’s equipment and adds Xenon headlamps, but the content points to the 2.5i Limited as the better all-around value for most buyers.
EyeSight is optional on Premium and Limited trim levels, and the Rear Vehicle Detection System is standard on Limited models.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.
- Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,403 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.19% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,621, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $10,772 sits slightly below last year's $11,362.
That decline suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to move a used Outback quickly. The current range still shows that well-kept examples can hold meaningful value, especially when they’re clean and well equipped.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2015 Subaru Outback earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, and versions equipped with EyeSight technology receive a Top Safety Pick+ rating.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses two cameras mounted on the windshield to watch the road ahead, warn you of danger, and apply the brakes if needed. The Rear Vehicle Detection System adds blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist, and it is standard on Limited models. Subaru also builds the Outback around a ring-shaped reinforcement frame for crash protection.
Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.19% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Redesigned for 2015, it’s bigger, more refined, and still keeps standard all-wheel drive.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,297, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $10,772 average.
- It’s aimed at active owners who want more space and versatility for passengers and cargo.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2015 is the stronger buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and broad market availability. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2016 is the secondary path to consider.
How does the 2015 Subaru Outback compare to the 2015 Toyota RAV4?
Our experts score the 2015 Subaru Outback 8.2/10 and the 2015 Toyota RAV4 7.3/10. The Outback stands out for its standard all-wheel drive, stronger safety story, and more wagon-like utility. The RAV4 is cheaper to start, but the Outback offers a lower average used price and a higher expert score. If you want a practical crossover with a stronger emphasis on safety and all-weather confidence, the Outback is the better fit.
