CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Ford Explorer

Summary
With 126 currently listed for sale near West Palm Beach, FL and an average price of $9,412, 19.8% of 2015 Ford Explorers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Ford Explorer 4.41 / 5 stars.
75.4% of 2015 Explorer models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Ford Explorer stands out as a family-oriented midsize SUV that had already moved well beyond the Explorer’s original truck-based roots. By this point, it was part of the fifth generation, which turned the model into a crossover-style vehicle and gave it a more car-like character than earlier Explorers. That shift helped make it more approachable for everyday use, while still leaving it with the roomy, versatile personality that has long defined the nameplate.
For 2015, the Explorer offered a 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, and buyers could also get a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder that helped raise combined fuel economy to 23 mpg, though only in front-wheel drive form. It also had available all-wheel drive, and AWD versions included hill descent control, hill descent assist, and a terrain mode system with four different settings. Inside, Ford had already brought modern infotainment to the Explorer, and buyers could add heated and ventilated front seats, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and other luxuries. That mix of space, features, and available traction hardware made it appealing to shoppers who wanted a practical SUV that could still feel fairly well equipped.
The 2015 Explorer was not without drawbacks. The source notes that this generation had a worse reliability record than its newer-school rivals, and that 2011 through 2013 models were especially problematic, which helps explain why later years are generally the ones to seek out. It also wasn’t the most efficient or the most luxurious choice in its class. Even so, it remained a competitive and familiar option for buyers who wanted a useful three-row SUV with decent towing ability, broad availability, and enough comfort features to make daily driving easier.

Good vehicle for a growing family. The XLT may not be as flashy as the Limited or as fast as the Sport, but itll get you from A to B. Very comfortable and it has tons of room.

How much does the 2015 Ford Explorer cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,343 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,343 |
| Year-Round High | $11,288 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,284 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.34% |
Prices have softened 8.34% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,814 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable number of options to compare.
Is the 2015 Ford Explorer a good car?
Generally — the 4.41/5 user rating points to a well-liked SUV for shoppers who want family-friendly space and everyday comfort. Drivers commonly praise its comfort, spaciousness, performance, driveability, and useful features, while also noting its styling and technology. The Explorer’s roomy, versatile setup makes it a practical fit if you want a three-row SUV with broad usability. With 29.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2015 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.41/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers’ feedback also points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with positive remarks about driveability and features supporting that impression. At the same time, the model’s reputation is tempered by concerns about gas mileage, so long-term ownership risk is more about operating costs and condition than outright satisfaction.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Ford Explorer?
At 61.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on any listing that looks especially appealing. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the SUV’s features and equipment all work as expected. If a listing has a clean history and strong maintenance records, it deserves extra attention.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Ford Explorer?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,814 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.34% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,343, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $10,343 sits slightly below last year's $11,284.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make future resale more dependent on condition, mileage, and equipment. If you buy well and keep the SUV in strong shape, you may be better positioned to limit depreciation losses later. Listings with cleaner histories and stronger appeal should remain easier to move when it’s your turn to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.41/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2015 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.34% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.41/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,036, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $10,343 average.
- Ford refreshed it with updated styling, upgraded features, a more efficient engine, and a Platinum trim.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2015 is the stronger starting point because prices have eased and there are still plenty of listings to compare. If you’re willing to spend more for a fresher, better-equipped version, the 2016 is the more appealing upgrade path. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2015 makes the most sense; for shoppers prioritizing newer features, the 2016 is worth the extra money.
