overall

Summary
With 800 currently listed for sale and an average price of $7,799, 28.7% of 2014 Volkswagen Passats for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Volkswagen Passat 4.28 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Volkswagen Passat stands out as a midsize sedan that was built at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, facility and designed with American buyers in mind, which shows up most clearly in its emphasis on space. It is also described as an attractive, composed sedan that aims for a balance of casual and classy rather than trying to be overly flashy.
As part of Volkswagen’s campaign to target larger sales numbers rather than enthusiast drivers, the 2014 Passat is larger and has a ride intended to appeal to a broader audience. The available information also points to technology that any driver can appreciate. Owners commonly praise its excellent fuel economy, comfortable interior, smooth handling, spacious legroom, and value, while some note missing features, conservative styling, and a lack of advanced technology compared with competitors.

I love the ride and features of this car. Handles great and although the price of diesel is more, I know the mileage you get from a diesel is greater compared to gas. Love the leg room also, both front and rear areas.

I've driven a lot of cars and this is one of my all time favorites. The Passat TDI even as a base car comes nicely loaded, the SEL has some added luxuries that make longer drives even nicer. The interior has decent styling and comfortable seats. It's the type of car you can buy and really enjoy driving because it's not breaking your bank account to drive with either the payment or the fuel bill. I would recommend looking into this car if you're in the market for a sedan. Don't be afraid of diesel.

Unlike the pictures and the legality of the tinted windows was a suprise as well as a missing right mirror and many minor but important damages including broken windshield.

Reviewed a 2014 Volkswagen TDI SE on Dec 7, 2014
So far a total of four NMS Passats in the family. All TDI's. I think this says something. Some will take issue with the conservative styling compared to the flashy offerings of other makers. Some will disagree but I tend to believe the conservative style will age far better. Then being basically German and not Asian... It's one of those things you either appreciate or don't. If you appreciate engineering and build quality, then place the NMS up on a rack and do a complete inspection. There's a reason that a decade old VW will not be rusted out. There's also a reason that at 100k miles the TDI is just getting her first wind. It's really difficult to quantify the difference between VW and most other competitive vehicles but it's truly vast. Downsides? There are some for some types of owners. If all you ever do is climb into your car and turn the key, then perhaps the Passat in general and the TDI in particular may not be your best choice. My experience with many TDI's of different vintages is that they will not tolerate neglect. Have the proper maintenance done or do it yourself. Don't skimp and don't use cheap components. If you fail to keep up there will usually be a price to be paid somewhere down the road. The biggest con? Not opting for the TDI. It makes the Passat something very special.

Is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat a good car?
Generally — 4.28/5. The expert rating is 7.83/10, and the model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise the Passat’s excellent fuel economy, comfortable interior, smooth handling, spacious legroom, and value. The overview also frames it as a midsize sedan built with American buyers in mind, with a focus on space and a balance of casual and classy rather than flashy styling.
That combination makes it a strong fit if you want a roomy, comfortable sedan that feels practical and easy to live with. 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat reliable?
Owners rate it 4.28/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a car that many drivers find dependable in everyday use, with praise centered on fuel economy, comfort, smooth handling, and value. It also notes only minor concerns about maintenance, which suggests the ownership experience is generally trouble-free for many shoppers.
The expert evaluation reinforces that sense of durability by describing the Passat as composed and efficient, with a calm ride and a practical character that suits regular commuting and family use. If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is making sure prior maintenance was kept up, especially on higher-mileage examples.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Volkswagen Passat?
At 56.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision or shows signs of uneven wear. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, tire wear, and whether the cabin and electronics still work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The TDI SE test model featured 17-inch alloy wheels but did not include foglights, and the cabin was described as simple but still upscale in appearance. That means you should pay close attention to feature gaps on lower trims if you want a more premium feel.
- Powertrain: The Passat offers a 168-hp 2.5-liter inline 5-cylinder, a 1.8-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder, a 276-hp 3.6-liter V6, and a 2.0-liter turbodiesel inline 4-cylinder. The diesel stands out for strong low-RPM torque and the best fuel economy, while the 1.8T improves efficiency over the 2.5.
- Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes front and side airbags, electronic stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, a crash-absorbing front crumple zone, and an Intelligent Crash Response System. The backup camera interface is a notable weak point, so check that system carefully.
- Infotainment: The tech setup includes Bluetooth, USB-connected device support, and access to smartphone music files by artist and more. The hardline iPhone connection and short cable are drawbacks, so make sure the phone integration works the way you want.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-liter engine is rated at 22 mpg city/32 highway, or 31 highway with the automatic. The 1.8T returns 24/35, or 34 with the automatic, while the V6 returns 20 mpg city/28 highway. The TDI is described as the mileage leader.
Which 2014 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2014 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5, 1.8T SEL Premium, 3.6, TDI SE.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5: This is the entry point, and it gives you the lowest starting price, but the available information suggests it is the least compelling choice if you care about efficiency or richer equipment. It makes sense only if your priority is keeping the purchase price down.
- 1.8T SEL Premium: This trim adds the turbocharged engine and better efficiency than the 2.5, and it is the only trim explicitly tied to that powertrain. It looks like the best-value choice if you want a stronger all-around balance of performance and economy.
- 3.6: If you want the most power, this is the trim to target. The V6 brings the strongest acceleration in the lineup, so it suits you best if you care more about passing power than fuel savings.
- TDI SE: This is the mileage-focused choice, with the diesel engine delivering the best fuel economy and strong low-end torque. It’s the right pick if you drive a lot and want efficiency first.
The safety content highlights a strong overall safety package, but the backup camera interface is a trim-level caveat worth checking on any example you consider.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Volkswagen Passat?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 817 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.09% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,783, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $7,783 sits slightly below last year's $8,377.
That price movement suggests the Passat has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. For a future seller, that means your biggest advantage will be entering ownership at a lower basis rather than expecting strong appreciation.
The model’s value story is supported by its practical appeal, roomy cabin, and strong owner satisfaction. If you keep mileage reasonable and maintain it well, those traits should help it remain appealing to used buyers.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.28/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat safe?
The 2014 Passat earns the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick accolade and a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front and side airbags, electronic stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, a crash-absorbing front crumple zone, and an Intelligent Crash Response System that shuts off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and activates the hazard lights after a crash.
One caveat is the backup camera interface, which is described as unnecessarily shrinking the screen. If you rely on that feature often, make sure it works cleanly and is easy to use before you buy.
Should I buy a 2014 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.09% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.28/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary describes it as a larger Passat with a ride that appeals to a broader audience and technology that any driver can appreciate.
The bottom line: The 2014 Passat makes the most sense if you want a roomy, comfortable midsize sedan with strong value and a softer used-car price. If you’re especially price-sensitive, this year’s softened market and decent deal availability make it worth a close look; if you want to compare alternatives, focus on whether another year gives you a better feature mix or cleaner history at a similar price.
