What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Volkswagen Jetta?

At 53.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has any accident history or incomplete service records. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the car’s maintenance has been kept up consistently. Because some owners mention potential costly engine issues, it’s smart to pay close attention to how the car starts, idles, and drives.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.0L S keeps the old hydraulic steering system, while higher trims add features such as leatherette upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity, a power moonroof, push-button ignition, navigation, a rear-view camera, and a Fender sound system.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes a 4-cylinder engine and a turbocharged 1.8-liter engine, with the turbo setup described as refined, smooth, and quick to respond.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, electronic stability control, and 6 airbags. Some trims also add a rear-view camera, HID headlights that swivel, and LED taillights.
• Infotainment: Most trims include a Media Device Interface with iPod adaptor, and higher trims add a touchscreen audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, an SD card slot, and VW Car-Net telematics.
• Fuel efficiency: The 1.8-liter engine with automatic transmission is rated at 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, and the hybrid is rated at 45 mpg combined.

Which 2014 Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?

The 2014 Volkswagen Jetta is offered in 10 trim levels: 2.0L S, 1.8T SE, 1.8T SE with Connectivity, 1.8T SE with Connectivity and Sunroof, 1.8T SEL, TDI, TDI SE, TDI SEL, GLI, and Hybrid SEL Premium.

Here's the short version:

• 2.0L S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the basics, including a 4-cylinder engine, manual transmission, steel wheels, power windows, and a height-adjustable driver’s seat. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Jetta, but it leaves out several convenience and tech upgrades found higher up.
• 1.8T SE: This trim adds the turbocharged engine, integrated turn-signal mirrors, leatherette upholstery, iPod cable, and satellite radio service. It’s the better-value choice if you want the stronger engine without moving too far up the price ladder.
• 1.8T SE with Connectivity: This version adds Bluetooth, VW Car-Net, and 16-inch alloy wheels on top of the SE equipment. It’s a smart pick if you want a more modern feature set without jumping to the pricier upper trims.
• 1.8T SE with Connectivity and Sunroof: This trim builds on the Connectivity model with a power moonroof, push-button ignition, and an upgraded touchscreen audio unit. Choose it if you want the most rounded midrange setup.
• 1.8T SEL: This is the most upscale gas trim mentioned, with an automatic transmission, 17-inch alloys, navigation, a rear-view camera, and a Fender sound system. It suits you best if you want the most comfort and convenience features in the standard lineup.
• TDI: The diesel models largely mirror the 1.8T trims in content, so they’re worth considering if you want diesel power without giving up the familiar Jetta feature structure.
• TDI SE: This diesel trim follows the same general equipment pattern as the 1.8T SE and is a sensible step up from the base diesel setup.
• TDI SEL: This is the more feature-rich diesel choice and mirrors the upper-end equipment approach of the gas SEL.
• GLI: The GLI variants add performance and a subtle lower body kit, so they’re the choice if you want the sportiest character in the lineup.
• Hybrid SEL Premium: This is the efficiency-focused model, distinguished primarily by its gas/electric powertrain.

Some trims add a rear-view camera, HID headlights that swivel, and LED taillights, so it’s worth checking exactly which safety and convenience features are included on the car you’re considering.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Volkswagen Jetta?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 795 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.90% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 53.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $7,134, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?

The current average of $7,134 sits slightly below last year's $7,581.

That softer pricing suggests the Jetta has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you choose a clean, well-kept example, you may have a better chance of holding value than if you buy a higher-mileage car with a rough history. Strong owner satisfaction also helps keep demand steady in the used market.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta safe?

The 2014 Volkswagen Jetta earns four-star ratings for front-impact and rollover protection from NHTSA.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, electronic stability control, and 6 airbags. Some trims also add a rear-view camera, HID headlights that swivel toward the direction of travel, and LED taillights. The main caveat is that the crash-test picture is incomplete, so you should weigh the available ratings alongside the specific trim’s equipment.

Should I buy a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.90% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2014 brings a new turbocharged engine, an upgraded suspension, and a more engaging driving feel.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $7,979, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $7,134 average.
• It is designed to be a versatile daily driver for commuting, family errands, and road trips.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2014 is the stronger buy because prices are softer and inventory is broad. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer-year alternative, the 2015 is the better path for shoppers who prioritize a more versatile daily-driver setup.

How does the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta compare to the 2014 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta 6/10 and the 2014 Honda Civic 8.2/10. The Civic is the stronger all-around pick, with more power, better fuel economy, and a higher expert score. The Jetta counters with a lower average used price and a larger trunk, so it can still make sense if you want to spend less and value practicality. If you care most about driving enjoyment and value, the Jetta has appeal; if you want the better-rounded compact sedan, the Civic is the safer bet.
