Why it stands out
The 2014 Toyota Highlander stands out as a family crossover that feels more engaging than the segment stereotype suggests. Toyota gave it enough power, technology, and athletic styling to make everyday driving feel more appealing, while still keeping it practical for routine errands and weekend trips. It is described as being just as capable and competent running to the corner store as it is heading up to the mountains, which captures its broad usefulness well.
That balance is a big part of its appeal. The Highlander is presented as a vehicle for buyers who need family-friendly space and versatility but do not want something dull to live with. Owner feedback reinforces that impression, with praise for reliability, comfort, value for money, and a spacious interior with useful features. At the same time, some owners wished for better fuel economy and seat comfort, and noted the absence of modern conveniences such as push-button start and a sunroof.

Overall the experience of driving the vehicle is fantastic. The higher seating above a sedan car makes this a pleasant ride in any weather enabling the driver to see far ahead when driving in heavy traffic. It has enough air bags to float a tank.

Our Limited AWD is a very solid car that we expect to drive for a long time. Very comfortable seats. The space is easily configured for people or cargo. Love the shelf under the dash!

Overall... excellent vehicle. Front row and 2nd row seats adjust to accommodate most drivers/riders. I did alot of shopping around before I made my purchase and what I found is that the Highlander is really the best value for the money. The interior is very nice... not cheap looking as compared to some other mid-size SUVs which were actually more expensive.

The car feels solid, that’s what I was looking for. The downside is that the seats are uncomfortable and the mirrors don’t fold in.

Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 1,177 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare. If you find a listing below $14,948.93, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — 4.78/5 from owners, and 8.67/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, and value for money, and they also like the spacious interior and useful features. The overview frames it as a family crossover that still feels engaging to drive, with enough power and technology to make daily use more appealing. That combination of practicality and livability helps explain why it appeals to buyers who want family-friendly space without giving up too much personality. With 32.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliability, comfort, and value for money as recurring strengths, and it also describes the vehicle as a dependable choice for everyday use. The expert review reinforces that sense of confidence by emphasizing how well the Highlander handles routine family duty while still feeling capable and competent. The cost-effectiveness commentary also suggests you get a lot of content for the price, which supports the case for long-term ownership.
For used buyers, the main risk is less about the model’s basic appeal and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by family use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota Highlander?
At 55.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on signs of prior body damage, uneven wear, and any evidence that the vehicle has been used hard or repaired poorly. Because this is a family crossover, interior condition and seat comfort matter too, especially if you plan to use it for daily commuting or road trips.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE trim includes standard seating for 8, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, a backup camera, Bluetooth hands-free calling, and plenty of storage, while the LE Plus adds three-zone climate control with rear climate toggles, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and SofTex leatherette seating. The XLE adds navigation, leather seating, and a detailed color digital display in the instrument panel, while the Limited adds 19-inch wheels, a JBL audio system, and upgraded safety tech like blind-spot monitoring.
- Powertrain: The base LE uses a 185-hp 2.7-liter inline 4-cylinder, but it is described as barely enough for the vehicle’s weight. A 3.5-liter V6 is optional on the LE and standard on the LE Plus and above, and it makes 270 hp with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is listed at 19 mpg city/25 highway for front-wheel-drive V6 trims and 20/25 for front-wheel-drive I4 trims, while an all-wheel-drive V6 test trim was listed at 18/24.
- Safety package: The Highlander comes standard with a backup camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and a full array of advanced front and side impact airbags. With the available pre-collision system, it is a 2014 Top Safety Pick Plus award winner. Other available safety tech includes lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The Highlander uses the Entune multimedia touchscreen interface with apps such as Pandora, Yelp, and Bing. The touchscreen is 6.1 inches on the base trim, and navigation is accessed through the app page rather than a dedicated dash button.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 front-wheel-drive setup returns 19 mpg city and 25 highway, while the front-wheel-drive I4 returns 20 mpg city and 25 highway. The all-wheel-drive V6 test trim was listed at 18 mpg city and 24 highway.
Which 2014 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?
The 2014 Toyota Highlander is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The LE is the most stripped-down choice, and it lacks the added comfort and convenience upgrades found higher up the range. You still get seating for 8, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, a backup camera, and Bluetooth, but the standard 185-hp 2.7-liter I4 is the weakest powertrain choice.
- Sweet-spot trim: The LE Plus is the best value pick if you want a more satisfying daily driver without jumping all the way to the top. It adds three-zone climate control with rear climate toggles, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and SofTex leatherette seating, while also giving you access to the stronger V6.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most upscale version, with 19-inch wheels, a JBL audio system, and upgraded safety tech like blind-spot monitoring. If you want the most features and are willing to pay for them, this is the trim that feels the most complete.
- Off-road trim: The AWD system is described as more robust than typical crossover setups, with downhill assist control and a center-locking differential, but this is still a family crossover rather than a dedicated off-road vehicle.
The available pre-collision system is the key safety-package note to keep in mind, since it unlocks the Top Safety Pick Plus recognition.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Toyota Highlander?

- Inventory: There are 1,177 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,948.93, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $16,088 sits slightly above last year's $16,085.
That small increase suggests the market has been stable rather than volatile, which is usually a good sign if you plan to sell later. A steady price trend can help you avoid sharp depreciation swings, especially if you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition. Listings that are accident-free and well maintained should be easier to position competitively when it is time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander safe?
It earns a 2014 Top Safety Pick Plus award from IIHS.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The Highlander comes standard with a backup camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and a full array of advanced front and side impact airbags. With the available pre-collision system, it reaches its top safety recognition, and other available driver aids include lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. If you are comparing trims, the upgraded safety tech is part of what separates the higher-end versions from the base model.
Should I buy a 2014 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 model year stands out for bringing more power, technology, and athletic styling to a family crossover that had previously been more conservative.
The bottom line: If you want a used Highlander that balances practicality, strong owner satisfaction, and a stable price environment, the 2014 is a sensible target. If you are especially price-sensitive, focus on accident-free examples near the low end of the range and be selective about trim and equipment so you get the best mix of value and features.
