Why it stands out
The 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser stands out as a rugged, retro-styled SUV with a clear off-road focus. Its blocky design drew inspiration from Toyota’s classic FJ series, and its hardware was built around durable components meant for tough use. What made it especially distinctive was its rear-hinged doors, which opened with the front doors to create an entry point without pillars. It also offered a split-folding rear seat that opened up 66.8 cubic feet of cargo space, plus a factory roof rack and a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds.
For buyers who wanted capability over polish, the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser delivered. Rear-wheel drive was standard, but most models used four-wheel drive, and those systems were paired with a two-speed transfer case with low-range gearing. The SUV’s short wheelbase, good ground clearance, and available off-road packages reinforced its trail-ready character. Toyota also gave the 2014 model a Trail Teams Ultimate Edition with upgraded suspension components, bead-lock wheels, chunky off-road tires, a beefier skid plate package, and Heritage Blue paint.
The tradeoffs were just as clear. The FJ Cruiser’s fuel economy was poor, its back seat was cramped, and visibility was limited. Still, its reputation for reliability, strong off-road performance, and solid resale value made it appealing to buyers who wanted a distinctive SUV that could handle dirt, mud, and snow with confidence.

I love these trucks and recommend them highly as very good quality and has reliability. I already own three of these. Retains value more than any truck I know of and this was true throughout their years of production and beyond.

The FJ is an iconic tank! The design and over-engineering than went into the FJ is like no other Toyota I’ve own. We currently have a 2023 4Runner ORP, 2020 Tundra Limited OR, and a 2020 Tacoma OR…I’ll choose the FJ to drive any chance I get! No wonder the cult following and amazing resale/retention of value! Buy a clean, well maintained 2014 FJ while you can, very few left I could find that checked these boxes.
2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $29,376 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,246.81 |
| Year-Round High | $30,636.22 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $30,129 |

Prices have softened 2.50% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 125 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $28,246.81, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to very strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its great driving experience, reliability, and strong off-road capability. The review summary also highlights comfort and strong value retention, which matters if you want a distinctive SUV that can handle dirt, mud, and snow with confidence. With 28.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary repeatedly points to reliability, and drivers also describe it as dependable and trouble-free over time. That lines up with the model’s reputation for durability and its appeal to buyers who want something they can count on for long-term use. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is finding a truck that has been used hard off-road or poorly maintained, so condition matters as much as the badge.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser?
At 67.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from trucks with collision records or repeated claims. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has seen trail use, because off-road wear can show up in suspension, underbody, and drivetrain components. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and signs of hard use rather than just mileage.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser?
This is a moderate market, so you can buy now if the right listing appears, but selective shoppers should still compare carefully.
- Deal availability: 28.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 125 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.50% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 67.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,246.81, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser's resale value?
The current average of $29,376 sits slightly below last year's $30,129.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. Even so, the model’s strong owner satisfaction and reputation for value retention should help support demand over time. If you keep the vehicle in good condition and maintain it well, you’re more likely to preserve a stronger resale position than with a typical used SUV.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 28.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.50% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the distinctive styling, off-road focus, and strong owner satisfaction associated with this model year, the 2014 is a solid place to start. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep shopping the market and compare carefully, because the best value will usually come from a clean, well-kept example priced near the lower end of the range.
