CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Subaru Outback

Summary
With 1,171 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,055, 29.5% of 2014 Subaru Outbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Subaru Outback 4.67 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Subaru Outback stands out as a practical, capable wagon-crossover with a strong emphasis on all-wheel drive confidence and everyday usefulness. By this generation, the Outback had grown more crossover-like, with a taller body, a longer wheelbase, and added width that helped create more interior space. It also kept the standard AWD system and the terrain-oriented character that made the model appealing in the first place, while offering a more contemporary shape than earlier versions.
For 2014, Subaru made EyeSight standard on Outback Premium models, adding adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, and lane-departure warning to a trim that already benefited from the generation’s roomier cabin and available navigation and backup camera. The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine produced 170 horsepower and an equal amount of torque, while the available 3.6-liter flat-six made 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. That mix gives buyers a choice between the more common, efficient four-cylinder setup and a stronger six-cylinder option for those who want more highway punch.
The tradeoffs are familiar Subaru ones. This generation can have more electrical problems than later models, and the six-cylinder is harder to find and less fuel-efficient than the four-cylinder versions. Still, the 2014 Outback remains appealing because it is relatively inexpensive, practical, and well equipped for its age, with the added reassurance of standard AWD and a reputation for capability that continues to define the model.

The owner is very forthcoming with information about the vehicle, and make test driving it as easy as possible. The car appears to be in good shape and is being offered at a good price. It steers, corners, accelerates, and brakes well, as long as you are familiar with stick shift. However, I did not find the sweet spot in the manual transmission in my test drive that the owner refers to in the ad. It felt a bit more loosely coupled than I expected, given this. Still, it seems to be a good car.

I have a 2014 2.5i manual transmission And I absolutely love it. It has more power than I thought and I average about 30 -33 miles to the gallon on the highway. I can’t say enough about this car. I feel safe and I love the suspension and how it drives. I got this car specifically to take on long trips to the mountains. I’ve been in the process of researching camper conversion kits for the Outback. So far it’s ability to navigate over rough terrain is awesome. The biggest feature for me was the manual transmission that is only about $1200 to fix vs. a CVT auto transmission upwards of 6000. The radio is somewhat outdated but I can overlook that based on the value and other features of this car

How much does the 2014 Subaru Outback cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,059 |
| Year-Round Low | $9,006 |
| Year-Round High | $9,733 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $9,719 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.79% |
Prices have softened 6.79% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,177 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2014 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Subaru Outback earns a 4.67/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers commonly praise its reliable performance, safety features, and upgraded standard equipment, along with its handling and long-term durability. It also fits well if you want a practical, capable vehicle with standard all-wheel drive and everyday usefulness. With 29.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance to find a competitive offer.
Is the 2014 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights reliable performance, long-term durability, and a trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers. The same feedback also points to confidence in its all-wheel drive capability and overall dependability in varied driving conditions.
For used buyers, that suggests the bigger risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about how well a specific example has been maintained over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Subaru Outback?
At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has higher mileage or incomplete service records. Focus on overall condition, maintenance consistency, and any signs of electrical or wear-related issues before you commit.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.
- Deal availability: 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,177 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.79% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,006, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $9,059 sits slightly below last year's $9,719.
That softer pricing suggests the model has become more accessible for buyers, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can help protect your position when it’s time to resell. Demand should remain supported by the Outback’s practical reputation and broad appeal to shoppers who want capability and everyday usefulness.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.79% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $10,730, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $9,059 average.
- It was redesigned to be bigger and better while keeping strong all-wheel-drive capability.
The bottom line: If you want the lower entry price and a model with strong owner approval, the 2014 is the better starting point. If you’re willing to spend more for the redesigned 2015 and its broader upgrade, that newer year is the stronger alternative. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2014 offers the more approachable path.
