How much does the 2014 Subaru Forester cost?

Prices have softened 3.09% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,846 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable range of choices.

Is the 2014 Subaru Forester a good car?

Yes — the 2014 Subaru Forester earns a 4.58/5 user rating and a 6.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, reliability, and enjoyable driving experience, and many also like the smooth ride and strong fuel economy. In use, it fits especially well if you want a practical crossover with all-weather capability and everyday versatility. The market also shows 32.6% good or great deals, which supports the case for shopping carefully.

Is the 2014 Subaru Forester reliable?

Owners rate it 4.58/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to reliability, and the ownership experience is also described in terms that suggest a dependable, trouble-free vehicle you can count on. The performance notes reinforce that impression by emphasizing how confidently it handles mud, sand, ice, snow, and rain without fuss. The cost-effectiveness commentary also frames it as a useful, capable crossover that can deliver value over the long haul.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure a specific example has been maintained well, especially if it has seen hard winter use or higher mileage.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Subaru Forester?

At 63.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has lived through harsh weather or shows signs of heavy use. Focus on overall condition, evidence of prior repairs, and whether the cabin and controls still feel solid and well cared for. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example is often worth paying a little more for.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.5i starts at $21,995, while the 2.5i Premium adds a massive sunroof and roof rails. The XT trims bring larger 18-inch wheels and a more aggressive front-end appearance, and the cabin is described as simple and straightforward rather than flashy.
• Powertrain: The 2.5i trims use a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter boxer 4-cylinder with 170 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or an available CVT. The 2.0XT trims use a turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer 4-cylinder with 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, and the CVT can feel slow to respond when you ask for quick acceleration.
• Safety package: Subaru EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses cameras and sensors to warn you if you drift out of your lane or if a crash is imminent. It is optional on most trims, so you should confirm whether a specific listing has it.
• Infotainment: The Premium model uses a touchscreen for stereo and navigation, with AM/FM/XM satellite radio and Bluetooth streaming audio. The system is described as small and dated for the era, and the microphone quality for calls is a weak point.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5i with a 6-speed manual is rated at 22/29/24 mpg, the test model is rated at 24/32/27 mpg, and the Turbo XT trims return 23/28/25 mpg. The test notes also say the Forester averaged about 25 mpg in mixed driving.

Which 2014 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2014 Subaru Forester is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.0XT Premium, 2.0XT Touring.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5i: This is the entry point if you want the Forester’s core all-weather capability at the lowest price. It gives you the basic formula without the extra equipment found higher up the range.
• 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim if you want the most appealing mix of equipment and price. It adds the massive sunroof and roof rails, and it lines up well with the Forester’s practical personality.
• 2.0XT Premium: Choose this if you want the stronger turbocharged engine and the more energetic driving character. It also gets X-Mode, which helps in more inclement terrain.
• 2.0XT Touring: This is the top choice if you want the most fully equipped XT version and are willing to pay for it. It keeps the turbo power and X-Mode while sitting at the top of the range.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that Subaru EyeSight is optional on most trims, so verify whether a given vehicle has it.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Subaru Forester?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,846 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.09% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 63.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,512, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Subaru Forester's resale value?

The current average of $9,853 sits slightly below last year's $10,167.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you own one now, the current trend points to steady demand rather than a sharp value drop, especially for cleaner examples with strong maintenance records. Well-kept listings should still attract attention because the Forester’s practical reputation remains a selling point.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.58/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Subaru Forester safe?

The 2014 Subaru Forester earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Its safety equipment includes 7 standard airbags, a reinforced safety structure, vehicle dynamics control, antilock brakes, and electronic brakeforce distribution. Subaru EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses cameras and sensors to warn you about lane departure and an imminent crash. It is optional on most trims, so some listings will not have it.

Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.09% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.58/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert review says it feels dated at times, but its all-wheel-drive capability and versatility are standout strengths.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $11,211, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $9,853 average.
• It adds a stronger safety and recognition story, including a Top Safety Pick from IIHS.

The bottom line: If you want the lower price and strong all-weather usefulness, the 2014 is the better value play. If you can stretch your budget and want the newer-year alternative with a stronger safety headline, the 2015 is worth a look.
