Why it stands out
The 2014 Mazda CX-5 stands out because it brought Mazda’s sporty personality into the compact SUV class without giving up the everyday usefulness buyers expect. Mazda positioned it as a more fun, car-like alternative to mainstream rivals, and that shows up in its low-slung styling and sprightlier handling. It was also the brand’s first production model inspired by its Kodo design philosophy and its first car to use Skyactiv technologies, which were aimed at reducing fuel consumption and emissions while keeping the brand’s peppy feel.
For 2014, the CX-5’s power came from a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder with 155 horsepower, paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive available. Mazda also gave buyers a practical trim lineup, and even the mid-level Touring added useful equipment such as a power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, blind spot monitoring, and a rear-view camera. That mix of sharp driving manners and solid equipment helped make the CX-5 feel more polished than many compact SUVs of its time.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. The 2014 model has a poorer reputation for reliability than later CX-5s, and owners have reported engine, electrical, and brake issues. Some drivers also find it a bit compact for their needs. Even so, it remains appealing for shoppers who want a used SUV that feels more engaging to drive than most of its peers and still offers a good balance of comfort, efficiency, and features.

I really love this car. It drives really well for a 4 cylinder and gets excellent gas mileage for an suv period... it competes with most sedans but you still have the added space of an suv! The extra features of touchscreen dash, pandora, and bluetooth capabilities are all perks while on the road also. Great space for families in the backseat and trunk area.

I looked at the CR-V, RAV-4, Sportage, Sedona, Tuscon and many other mid-size crossover SUVs and all of them had considerably WORSE MPG for MORE COST. This was an easy no-brainer to buy. Once I felt how smooth the ride was, and the extras included for the price, I was sold. Luckily I got the metallic dark/midnight blue color which everyone loves, unlike the ugly Ford blue with its purple tint. After 2 months of driving, both automatic and manual mode, I'm getting great gas mileage, and I feel safe with its great safety rating. Would definitely buy again.

There are 684 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2014 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.6/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its smooth handling, fuel economy, and comfort, and many also like the extra features such as the backup camera and safety sensors. It also fits well if you want a compact SUV that feels more engaging to drive while still covering everyday usefulness. With 33.2% of listings priced as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable daily-driving experience, with many shoppers describing it as smooth, comfortable, and easy to live with over time. That said, you should still weigh long-term ownership risk carefully, since used examples can vary a lot in condition and maintenance history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Mazda CX-5?
At 55.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was repaired properly. Put inspection priority on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of past collision work, then make sure the mechanical condition matches the seller’s description. Because this model can be compact for some buyers, it also helps to check that the cabin and cargo space fit your needs before you commit.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 684 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,684, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $11,033 sits slightly below last year's $11,043.
That small decline suggests the market has been fairly stable, which can help future sellers because pricing pressure has not moved sharply against the model. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you should have a reasonable path to resale later. Demand is also helped by the fact that many shoppers respond positively to this model year’s driving feel and overall ownership experience.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $12,197, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $11,033 average.
- It adds a more enjoyable driving character with stronger overall appeal for fun-focused shoppers.
The bottom line: Choose the 2014 if you want a lower-cost entry point with strong owner satisfaction and a stable price trend. If you can stretch your budget and want a newer alternative, the 2015 is the better secondary path for buyers who value a more engaging drive.
