CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Mazda CX-5

Summary
With 717 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,123, 35.3% of 2014 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Mazda CX-5 4.62 / 5 stars.
56.1% of 2014 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Mazda CX-5 stands out because it brought Mazda’s sporty personality into the compact SUV class without losing the everyday usefulness buyers expect. Mazda positioned it as a rival to mainstream crossovers, but gave it a more car-like feel and sharper handling than many of its peers. It also marked an important step for the brand as the first production model inspired by Mazda’s Kodo design philosophy and the first car to use Skyactiv technologies, which were aimed at reducing fuel consumption and emissions while keeping performance lively.
For 2014, the CX-5’s appeal came from its balance of efficiency, drivability, and equipment. The available 2.5-liter version joined the range in 2014 with an extra 29 horsepower, giving the SUV more pace to match its sporty character. Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive available, and the model could be had with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Even in this early generation, Mazda gave the CX-5 a solid feature set, including available blind spot monitoring, a rear-view camera, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel on higher trims.
There are trade-offs, though. The 2014 Mazda CX-5 has a poorer reliability reputation than later CX-5s, and owners have reported engine, electrical, and brake issues. It is also not the roomiest choice in the class, which may matter to buyers who need maximum practicality. Still, for shoppers who value style, comfort, and a more engaging drive than most compact SUVs deliver, the 2014 CX-5 remains a distinctive option.

I really love this car. It drives really well for a 4 cylinder and gets excellent gas mileage for an suv period... it competes with most sedans but you still have the added space of an suv! The extra features of touchscreen dash, pandora, and bluetooth capabilities are all perks while on the road also. Great space for families in the backseat and trunk area.

I looked at the CR-V, RAV-4, Sportage, Sedona, Tuscon and many other mid-size crossover SUVs and all of them had considerably WORSE MPG for MORE COST. This was an easy no-brainer to buy. Once I felt how smooth the ride was, and the extras included for the price, I was sold. Luckily I got the metallic dark/midnight blue color which everyone loves, unlike the ugly Ford blue with its purple tint. After 2 months of driving, both automatic and manual mode, I'm getting great gas mileage, and I feel safe with its great safety rating. Would definitely buy again.

I totally love the safety features! The back up camera and the signals for the blind spot have already proved invaluable. The size is perfect for me.

You should start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, title status, and ownership history. Focus your condition check on signs of past repair quality, uneven panel gaps, and any issues that could affect long-term reliability or resale.

That small increase suggests the CX-5 has held its value fairly well rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that kind of stability can be helpful because it points to a market that is still willing to pay consistent money for the model. If you buy carefully and keep the vehicle in good condition, you may be better positioned to preserve value when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $12,435, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $11,102 average.
- It adds a more engaging driving character.
The bottom line: Choose the 2014 if you want the better value and are willing to shop carefully for condition. If you can stretch your budget and want the next year’s higher-priced alternative, the 2015 is the better secondary path for buyers focused more on driving character than upfront savings.
