It's almost time, and before the Gallardo retires into the waning light, Lamborghini wants to make sure its most popular model is forgone but not forgotten. In order to accomplish this goal, a series of special editions have been paraded past our eager eyes over the past decade, and this final year of production will be no different.

Squadra Corse is the name of the hour here, a designation that identifies both the new motorsports department at Lamborghini Automobilia and the last special-edition trim for the departing Gallardo. This department will handle all motorsports activities at the Italian tractor manufacturer, while the car will handle winning.

The new Squadra Corse is a road-legal version of the Gallardo Super Trofeo race car, itself based on the Gallardo Superleggera (super light). Liberal use of aluminum and carbon fiber in the door panels, rear wing, racing seats and center console cover (grazie) means 150 pounds have been shaved off the 4-wheel performer, and a quick-release hood echoes the racing chops of its inspiration.

The 5.2-liter V10 gets the full treatment here, and with 570 hp being pumped through a 6-speed "e gear" robotized sequential transmission (are the Italians in a competition with the Germans for the most ridiculous transmission name?), the Squadra Corse can zip to 60 in just 3.4 seconds, going on to a top speed of 199 mph and covering the quarter-mile in 10.4 seconds. And just so you don’t forget the Italian heritage that’s baked right into the name, the Squadra Corse comes fitted with a side decal in the Italian-flag colors of green, red and white running the length of the door leading into the rear brake scoop. While available in white, gray and red, the 15 cars bound for the U.S. will all be painted in Giallo Midas Yellow, to retain the understated character of the Gallardo.

Of course, this just adds to the list of special editions already residing in the Lamborghini stables—vehicles like the Spyder/Spyder Performante, the previously mentioned Super Trofeo and Superleggera, and the only rear-wheel-drive option, the LP 550-2.

And still, all is overshadowed by the impending release of the upcoming Gallardo replacement due next year, heavily expected to be christened the Huracan. Every indication is that it will be powered by the same V10 engine, updated to produce more than 600 hp, meaning the Squadra Corse will be old news before the engine is even broken in. That seems like a short shelf life for something that will make you a quarter-million poorer by simply turning the key.
