Why it stands out
The 2014 Honda Pilot stands out as a practical midsize crossover SUV built around space and utility. It has lots of room for people, lots of room for cargo, and lots of room to stash all your stuff, making it the kind of vehicle that prioritizes carrying capacity over flash. The overall impression is that form follows function: it is designed to fit as many passengers and as much gear as possible while still staying within owners’ budgets and garages.
That focus on usefulness is also what makes the 2014 Honda Pilot appealing to buyers who need a family-size vehicle rather than simply want one. The source describes it as not especially pretty or technologically sophisticated, but still easy to love because it does the basics so well. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal by pointing to spacious seating, reliability, comfort, a high safety rating, and versatility for carrying a larger number of passengers. At the same time, some owners have reported hard shifting and a wide turn radius, so its strengths are practical rather than polished.

I cant say enough about this vehicle. Its my truck!! I currently have a 2009 and I will be upgrading to this model. The safety rating is high , and very comfortable at that. The cargo space stands out above all others, all adults and children in carseats have space. Most vesitile vehicle seat related, cant beat 8 seats!! Love this vehicle!!

The pilot is a solid vehicle if you take care of it. My sister in law bought one new in 2003 and still has it. My son has a 2013 with 111,000 miles. If you take of it and do the required maintenance it will last well over 200,000 miles. Dont skip the timing belt interval this is a interface engine and will be junk if the belt breaks.

The Pilot seems to be in good condition. That said, it had been involved in a more serious accident which gave me reason to hold off on its purchase. In addition there were approximately $2,000 in fees that made me walk away.

I sold Hondas for 5 years and the only thing I would change is the brand of tires. I would go with Michelins which is what came on them from the factory when I was selling them.

Is the 2014 Honda Pilot a good car?
Generally — 4.44/5 from owners and 6.83/10 from our experts point to a solid used SUV choice. The model scores 8/10 across Performance, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owner feedback repeatedly highlights spacious seating, reliability, comfort, and versatility for carrying a larger number of passengers. That lines up with the Pilot’s overview: you’re shopping for a family-size crossover that prioritizes space and utility over flash, so it makes the most sense if you value practicality more than style or advanced tech.
With 30.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Honda Pilot reliable?
Owners rate it 4.44/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also points to reliability, and the broader review summary reinforces that the Pilot is seen as dependable and versatile for family use. The expert evaluation adds that reliability is expected to be better than average, and the cost-effectiveness notes say overall ownership costs are rated favorably.
Honda also includes a few ownership-friendly touches, including a reasonable sticker price and regular lease specials, which can help keep the ownership experience manageable. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that age-related wear may show up in a vehicle that already has a reputation for hard shifting and a wide turn radius.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Honda Pilot?
At 56.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and how the transmission and steering feel on a test drive. Because this model is valued for utility, you’ll want to make sure the cabin, cargo area, and family-use features still hold up well.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LX is the most basic version, while the EX adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, a 10-way power driver’s seat, remote keyless entry, and a security system. The EX-L adds leather seats, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power sunroof, and a power tailgate with separate liftglass. The Touring adds navigation, a rear-seat entertainment system, a premium audio system, memory for the driver’s seat, and unique 18-inch machined-finish wheels.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 250 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 5-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, and 4WD with Variable Torque Management is available if you want extra traction.
- Safety package: Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure is standard, and the Pilot includes basic crash-energy management. The safety content also notes that the SUV lacks many modern driver-assistance technologies.
- Infotainment: Standard equipment includes Bluetooth, a USB port, triple-zone climate control with a humidity sensor, and a basic reversing camera with poor resolution. Navigation and a better camera are available on the EX-L, while the Touring adds a premium sound system, video input jacks, and a 115-volt power outlet.
- Fuel efficiency: The Touring 4WD is rated at 17 mpg city/24 highway/20 combined, and skipping 4WD improves those figures by 1 mpg in each category.
Which 2014 Honda Pilot trim should I buy?
The 2014 Honda Pilot is offered in 4 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the value entry point if you want the Pilot’s core space and utility at the lowest price. It keeps things simple, so it suits you best if you mainly want a family hauler and don’t need many extras.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday equipment like a power driver’s seat, keyless entry, and a security system without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- EX-L: Choose this if you want the Pilot to feel more comfortable and upscale, thanks to leather seating, heated front seats, a sunroof, and a power tailgate. It’s the right middle ground if you plan to keep the SUV for family duty and want more convenience.
- Touring: This is the trim to buy if you want the most features, including navigation, rear-seat entertainment, premium audio, and driver-seat memory. It makes the most sense if you regularly carry passengers and want the most complete setup.
The safety content notes that the Pilot lacks many modern driver-assistance technologies, so even higher trims do not fully close that gap.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Honda Pilot?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 792 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.73% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,622, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Honda Pilot's resale value?
The current average of $10,873 sits slightly below last year's $11,294.
That price movement suggests the Pilot has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. The current market also shows a defined low-end range, so a well-bought example has a better chance of holding appeal than one purchased at the top of the market. Strong owner satisfaction can also support demand when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.44/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Honda Pilot safe?
The 2014 Honda Pilot earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with no individual NHTSA assessment below four stars.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure is standard, and the Pilot’s safety content emphasizes crash-energy management as a core design strength. The review also notes that the SUV lacks many modern driver-assistance technologies, so you should not expect the kind of active-safety suite found in newer family SUVs. The main caveat is that the IIHS rating predates the small-overlap frontal test, which had not been performed at the time of the review.
Should I buy a 2014 Honda Pilot or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.73% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.44/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- You want a practical, space-first family SUV that emphasizes utility over flash.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,685, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $10,873 average.
- It keeps the same roomy family-SUV formula but is still an older design that lacks modern tech.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2014 is the smarter buy because it combines lower pricing with strong owner satisfaction and a practical family-friendly layout. If you’re willing to pay more for a slightly newer example, the 2015 is the secondary path, but it doesn’t change the Pilot’s core strengths enough to outweigh the price gap for most budget-conscious shoppers.
