overall

Summary
With 1,195 currently listed for sale and an average price of $7,037, 26.9% of 2014 Ford Focus models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Ford Focus 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Ford Focus stands out by feeling more substantial than a typical economy car. Its solid chassis and responsive suspension give it a composed, engaging character, while its still-fresh look helps it avoid the dated feel that can affect compact cars after a few years on the market. The Focus also benefits from the momentum of a major redesign, and its widespread presence on roads speaks to how familiar and established it has become.
For buyers, the appeal is a mix of style, efficiency, and everyday livability. Drivers generally praise its stylish design, excellent fuel economy, good sound system, and comfortable front seats. At the same time, the car’s recurring transmission issues are a notable drawback and can raise reliability concerns, especially for shoppers considering an automatic. That balance of strong driving manners and practical strengths, tempered by caution around transmission problems, is what makes the 2014 Ford Focus distinctive.

Stay clear of the Ford Focus SE 2014 -2018. Transmission is a ticking time bomb. Very unreliable. TCM among other transmission issues. Left me stranded more than once. Thank God I had USAA roadside support. Finally got fed up with it, trade it in for KIA RIO S.

It has good features. Lane change alerts would be good, better than some small cars, like the Sonic

I like how it looks and handles. It is very quiet and very smooth, especially around corners and over pot holes. I am very impressed overall with both the feel and maintenance and would definitely recommend it to anyone. Love it!

This is the first hatchback I have ever owned. This car handles pretty good and great fuel economy. I have always owned mustangs so it was very different owing this car. Over all this is a great car. The mods are out there to improve it and the market is still growing.

The cost-effectiveness commentary also suggests the package can feel worthwhile for the money.
The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is the transmission, so you should be especially cautious if you’re considering an automatic.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Ford Focus?
At 62.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has an automatic transmission. Focus on signs of prior body damage, uneven tire wear, brake condition, and any hesitation or shuddering during a test drive. If the car has been in an accident, make sure repairs were done cleanly and that the car tracks straight and feels consistent at speed.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S and SE trims use rear drum brakes, while other trims get 4-wheel discs; the Titanium adds stronger stopping performance and more equipment.
- Powertrain: The car uses a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated inline 4-cylinder with 160 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque, paired here with a dual-clutch 6-speed automatic; a 5-speed manual is also mentioned, and the automatic can feel shuddery in traffic.
- Safety package: Seven airbags come standard, including a driver’s knee airbag, and the car is described as having a full suite of standard protection; the Titanium’s 4-wheel discs and summer tires improve stopping performance.
- Infotainment: The Titanium includes Ford Sync, MyFord Touch, an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, and a 10-speaker Sony sound system; the system is criticized for being clunky and distracting.
- Fuel efficiency: The automatic returns 27 mpg city/37 highway, while the manual drops 1 mpg on both ends.
Which 2014 Ford Focus trim should I buy?
The 2014 Ford Focus is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, Titanium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the simplest path into the Focus, but it comes with rear drum brakes, so you give up some of the hardware found on higher trims.
- SE: This is the trim most shoppers should start with if you want a better balance of equipment and value without jumping to the top end.
- Titanium: This is the best-equipped choice, adding the strongest feature set, 4-wheel discs, and the most premium tech and audio setup.
The safety content also notes that trim choice matters because braking hardware varies, so the higher trims are the safer bet if you want the strongest stopping performance.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Ford Focus?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,196 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.70% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $6,825, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Ford Focus's resale value?
The current average of $7,011 sits slightly below last year's $7,132.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means you may not see strong appreciation unless the car is especially clean, well maintained, and equipped with desirable features. The transmission reputation can also weigh on buyer confidence, which may limit resale strength for some examples.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Ford Focus safe?
The 2014 Ford Focus earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover tests and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded it its highest rating of Good in all tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Seven airbags come standard, including a driver’s knee airbag. The safety content also notes that braking performance varies by trim, with S and SE models using rear drum brakes while other trims get 4-wheel discs. That means you should pay close attention to the exact trim and brake setup when comparing used listings.
Should I buy a 2014 Ford Focus or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.70% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 stands out for its composed chassis, responsive suspension, and strong safety results.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $7,561, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $7,011 average.
- It brings a more sophisticated, European-influenced driving feel.
The bottom line: If you want the lower entry price and strong safety of the 2014, it remains the value play. If you’re willing to spend more for a fresher-feeling alternative, the 2015 is the better upgrade path; price-sensitive buyers should stay focused on the 2014 and shop condition carefully.
