CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Ford Focus
overall

Summary
With 1,216 currently listed for sale and an average price of $7,031.00, 24.3% of 2014 Ford Focus models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Ford Focus 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
62.2% of 2014 Focus models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Ford Focus stands out by feeling more substantial than a typical economy car. Its solid chassis and responsive suspension give it a composed, engaging character, while its still-fresh look helps it avoid the dated feel that can affect compact cars after a few years on the market. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a small car that does not feel stripped down or purely utilitarian.
It also benefits from the momentum of a redesign that kept it looking current among strong competitors. With more than 10 million examples rolling down the world’s highways, the Focus is a familiar sight, and its broad popularity adds to its appeal as a practical everyday choice. Owner feedback reinforces that image, with praise for its stylish design, excellent fuel economy, good features, and comfortable front seats.
At the same time, the 2014 Ford Focus is not without drawbacks. Recurring transmission issues have been reported, and those concerns can affect confidence in the car’s long-term reliability. For shoppers, that means the Focus can be attractive for its driving feel and efficiency, but it is also a model that deserves careful attention to its transmission history.

Stay clear of the Ford Focus SE 2014 -2018. Transmission is a ticking time bomb. Very unreliable. TCM among other transmission issues. Left me stranded more than once. Thank God I had USAA roadside support. Finally got fed up with it, trade it in for KIA RIO S.

It has good features. Lane change alerts would be good, better than some small cars, like the Sonic

I like how it looks and handles. It is very quiet and very smooth, especially around corners and over pot holes. I am very impressed overall with both the feel and maintenance and would definitely recommend it to anyone. Love it!

This is the first hatchback I have ever owned. This car handles pretty good and great fuel economy. I have always owned mustangs so it was very different owing this car. Over all this is a great car. The mods are out there to improve it and the market is still growing.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $7,050 |

| Year-Round High | $7,256.62 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $7,191 |

Prices have softened 1.96% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,180 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $6,859.08, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Ford Focus a good car?
Generally — the 2014 Ford Focus earns 4/5 from owners and 7.67/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its stylish design, excellent fuel economy, good features, and comfortable front seats. The overview also points to a solid chassis and responsive suspension, which helps it feel more substantial and engaging than many compact cars. That makes it a strong fit if you want a small car that feels composed and well-equipped rather than stripped down.
At the same time, recurring transmission concerns show up in owner feedback, so the appeal is strongest if you value the driving feel, efficiency, and feature set and are willing to shop carefully. With 26.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to find a compelling example.
Is the 2014 Ford Focus reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary repeatedly points to the car as stylish, fuel-efficient, and good value, while also noting that many drivers see it as enjoyable and dependable enough for everyday use. The expert drive notes that the chassis and suspension feel stout and confidence-inspiring, which supports the sense that the car is built to handle regular use well. The cost-effectiveness notes also suggest the package can feel worthwhile for the money.
The main ownership risk for used buyers is the recurring transmission concern, so a careful test drive and service-history review matter more here than they would on a simpler compact car.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Ford Focus?
At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has any transmission-related symptoms or incomplete service records. Focus on how the car shifts in stop-and-go traffic, whether it shudders or hesitates, and whether the previous owner kept up with maintenance. Condition matters a lot here because the model’s appeal depends on both its driving feel and its mechanical health.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: S and SE trims use rear drum brakes, while other trims get 4-wheel discs; the Titanium adds summer tires and stronger stopping performance.
- Powertrain: The 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder makes 160 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque, and the dual-clutch automatic can feel hesitant in traffic; a 5-speed manual is also mentioned and returns 27 mpg city/37 highway with 1 mpg less on both ends than the automatic.
- Safety package: Seven airbags come standard, including a driver’s knee airbag, and the car is described as achieving a full 5-star overall score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration; the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it its highest rating of Good in all tests.
- Infotainment: The Titanium includes an 8-inch touchscreen, Ford Sync, MyFord Touch, navigation, and dual-zone automatic climate controls; the systems are described as clunky and distracting to use while driving.
- Fuel efficiency: The automatic returns 27 mpg city/37 highway, while the manual drops 1 mpg on both ends.
Which 2014 Ford Focus trim should I buy?
The 2014 Ford Focus is offered in 1 trim level: Titanium.
Here's the short version:
The Titanium is the trim described in the data, and it brings the most equipment, including the upgraded Sony sound system, navigation, dual-zone automatic climate controls, and the 8-inch touchscreen. It also pairs with the stronger braking setup and summer tires in the tested example, but the MyFord Touch and Sync interface is a real usability drawback, so you should value features over simplicity if you choose it.
The safety-package note is straightforward: seven airbags come standard, including a driver’s knee airbag.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Ford Focus?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,180 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.96% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $6,859.08, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Ford Focus's resale value?
The current average of $7,050 sits slightly below last year's $7,191.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point today. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and documentation rather than on broad market momentum alone. Well-kept examples should still draw interest because the model remains popular and efficient.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Ford Focus safe?
It earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crashes for the passenger and rollover testing, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it its highest rating of Good in all tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Seven airbags come standard, including a driver’s knee airbag, and that broad airbag coverage is a meaningful part of the car’s safety story. The Titanium’s four-wheel discs and summer tires also improve stopping performance compared with lower trims. The main caveat is that safety hardware varies by trim, so you should confirm exactly which braking setup and tire package a used example has.
Should I buy a 2014 Ford Focus or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.96% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 stands out for its composed chassis, responsive suspension, and strong safety score.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $7,669, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $7,050 average.
- It offers a more polished ride and handling feel.
The bottom line: If you want the lower-priced option with strong safety and good owner satisfaction, the 2014 is the better starting point. If you are willing to pay more for a slightly more polished driving experience, the 2015 is worth a look; price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2014 and shop carefully for a well-documented example.
