Is the 2014 Ford Focus a good car?

Generally — the 2014 Ford Focus earns a 4/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Drivers most often praise its stylish design, excellent fuel economy, and good features such as the sound system and comfortable front seats. The overview also points to a small car that feels more substantial and polished than a typical economy car, with a composed chassis and responsive suspension.

If you want a compact car that feels more refined than stripped-down, this one fits that brief. The market also shows 29.0% of listings as good or great deals, so you have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2014 Ford Focus reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback repeatedly points to reliability concerns tied to recurring transmission issues, even while many drivers still describe the car as enjoyable and good value for money. The expert drive notes that the dual-clutch transmission can hunt and shudder in traffic, which reinforces that caution.

That means your biggest long-term ownership risk is likely to center on the transmission, so a careful test drive and service-history review matter a lot on the used market.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Ford Focus?

At 63% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering an automatic. Focus on transmission behavior, brake condition, tire wear, and whether the car feels consistent in stop-and-go driving.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Titanium trim adds a more upscale feel with features like the handling package, 18-inch alloys, navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control, Ford Sync and MyFord Touch, a rear-view camera, power heated mirrors, keyless entry and start, and the upgraded Sony sound system. Lower trims give up some of that equipment, so you should decide whether the extra tech and comfort are worth it.
• Powertrain: The main setup uses a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated inline 4-cylinder with 160 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque, paired with a dual-clutch 6-speed automatic. An optional 5-speed manual is also mentioned, and the transmission character is a major part of the ownership experience.
• Safety package: Seven airbags come standard, including a driver’s knee airbag. The car also uses rear drum brakes on S and SE trims, while other trims get 4-wheel discs, so trim choice affects braking hardware.
• Infotainment: The Titanium includes an 8-inch touchscreen display, Ford Sync, MyFord Touch, navigation, and the Sony sound system. The tech is feature-rich, but the interface is described as clunky and distracting.
• Fuel efficiency: The PowerShift automatic returns 27 mpg city/37 highway, while the manual drops 1 mpg on both ends from that figure.

Which 2014 Ford Focus trim should I buy?

The 2014 Ford Focus is offered in 1 trim level: Titanium.

Here's the short version:

Titanium: This is the trim that brings the most complete package in the available data, including the upgraded Sony sound system, navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry and start, a rear-view camera, and the handling package on the tested example. It suits you best if you want the most features and a more polished feel, but the tech interface and dual-clutch transmission are still worth evaluating carefully. The safety content also notes that S and SE trims use rear drum brakes, while other trims get 4-wheel discs.

What is the 2014 Ford Focus's resale value?

The current average of $6,876 sits slightly below last year's $7,074.

That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a better entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend more on condition, mileage, and transmission health than on broad market momentum.

Should I buy a 2014 Ford Focus or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.79% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The expert summary highlights a fresh-feeling redesign that kept the Focus current among competitors.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $7,576, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $6,876 average.
• It was refreshed and offered in a variety of configurations.

The bottom line: If you want the lower entry price and are comfortable shopping carefully for condition and transmission behavior, the 2014 is the better value play. If you’d rather pay more for the refreshed 2015 and its broader configuration range, that’s the cleaner alternative for buyers who prioritize a newer-feeling package.
