Why it stands out
The 2014 Dodge Durango stands out as a rugged, substantial SUV that feels as if it were carved from a single block of steel. That toughness is part of its appeal, but it is paired with a more polished character than many buyers might expect. Rather than the old-school image some people associate with the name, this version is described as stylish, safe, roomy, refined, and technologically sophisticated, making it a more modern and appealing choice than its reputation might suggest.
Inside, the 2014 Dodge Durango’s spacious cabin is one of its biggest strengths, and owners also praise its comfort, power, and the quality of materials such as leather seats. The Uconnect system is another commonly appreciated feature because of its smooth operation. The main drawback is that reliability and cost-of-ownership predictions are unfavorable, and some owners have reported issues with the engine and climate control systems.

Bought new, and luv my Durango, 206k miles later. No major repairs needed until recently. Has the famous Dodge Ticking sound, lifters need replacing I’m told. And transfer case needs replacing, because truck gears grind or something during takeoff if accelerating too fast. Besides those two things, can’t think of anything besides Normal wear and tear. 10 years later and I Still luv my Durango.

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,827 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,467.93 |
| Year-Round High | $11,530.84 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,503 |

Prices have softened 5.88% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 654 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $10,467.93, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Dodge Durango a good car?
Generally — 4.45/5 from owners and 7.5/10 from experts point to a model that lands well with shoppers who want space, comfort, and a polished feel. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.
Owners repeatedly praise the spacious interior, strong power, comfortable ride, quality materials like leather seats, and the smooth operation of the Uconnect system. The overview also frames it as a roomy, refined SUV that works well if you want a substantial family vehicle with a more modern character than its reputation suggests.
The current market shows 29.8% of listings as good or great deals, so you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Dodge Durango reliable?
Owners rate it 4.45/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. At the same time, owner feedback also points to reliability concerns, especially around the engine and climate control systems, so you should not treat this as a carefree ownership pick.
The expert review reinforces that caution by calling out unfavorable reliability and cost-of-ownership predictions, even while praising the SUV’s refinement and capability. It also notes that the Durango feels rugged and durable in motion, which helps explain why it can seem well built despite the ownership-risk warnings.
For used buyers, that means you should plan on a careful inspection and budget with some reserve for maintenance or repairs over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Dodge Durango?
At 59% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example or one with a long option list. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven wear, and any evidence that the vehicle’s electronics, climate system, or drivetrain have been stressed.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SXT is the most stripped-down version, while the SXT Plus adds a 12-way power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, roof-rail crossbars, and satellite radio. The Limited adds leather seats, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Uconnect Access, dual USB charging ports, a 115-volt outlet, an upgraded sound system, remote engine start, a reversing camera, rear parking-assist sensors, and a universal garage door opener. The R/T adds a 5.7-liter V8, dual exhaust, performance steering, a sport-tuned suspension, heavy-duty brakes, and 20-inch wheels. The Citadel adds premium leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a power sunroof, navigation, a cargo net, and a cargo cover. The best-value trim is the Limited because it adds a broad mix of comfort, convenience, and safety equipment without jumping all the way to the sportier or most luxurious versions.
- Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 290 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque and is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The available 5.7-liter V8 adds more muscle and increases towing capacity to 7,400 pounds, while the V6 version is rated to tow 6,200 pounds.
- Safety package: Trailer Sway Control is standard for all 2014 Durango models. The Limited can be upgraded with rain-sensing wipers, automatic high-beam headlights, and Blind-Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Path Detection. That system is also available on the R/T and Citadel, bundled with Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward-Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation.
- Infotainment: The Durango uses an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Uconnect Access services on higher trims, and the system is described as easy to use with responsive controls and clear graphics. Uconnect Access adds traffic, weather, gas-price lookup, movie listings, sports scores, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and emergency calling.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test vehicle averaged 18.2 mpg, and the EPA estimate for that AWD setup was 19 mpg. The review also notes that the Durango missed that estimate by 0.8 mpg.
Which 2014 Dodge Durango trim should I buy?
The 2014 Dodge Durango is offered in 4 trim levels: SXT, SXT Plus, Limited, R/T, Citadel.
Here's the short version:
- SXT: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Durango’s size and basic capability at the lowest starting price, but it is the least equipped version.
- SXT Plus: This is the smarter starting point if you want a more usable daily driver, because it adds a power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, roof-rail crossbars, and satellite radio.
- Limited: This is the best-value trim. It adds leather seats, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, the 8.4-inch touchscreen, Uconnect Access, remote engine start, and useful parking and camera features.
- R/T: Choose this if you want the sportiest setup, with the V8, sport-tuned suspension, performance steering, heavy-duty brakes, and a more aggressive appearance.
- Citadel: Pick this if you want the most upscale Durango, with premium leather, ventilated front seats, navigation, a sunroof, and the most luxury-oriented equipment.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that Blind-Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Path Detection is available on the Limited and also on the R/T and Citadel, where it is bundled with Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward-Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Dodge Durango?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 654 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.88% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,467.93, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Dodge Durango's resale value?
The current average of $10,827 sits slightly below last year's $11,503.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Durango easier to buy than to sell later at a premium. If you are planning to own it for a while, the softer pricing can help your entry cost, but it also signals that future resale gains are unlikely to be strong. For a seller, that means pricing competitively will matter more than expecting the model to hold value especially well.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.45/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Dodge Durango safe?
It earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests. IIHS testing gives it the top rating of Good in all measures except the small-overlap frontal-impact test, which had not been assessed at the time of the review.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Durango includes Uconnect Access with a 911 button, Ready Alert Braking, Rain Brake Support, and Trailer Sway Control as standard. Available safety tech includes a reversing camera, rear parking-assist sensors, rain-sensing wipers, automatic high-beam headlights, Blind-Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Path Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Forward-Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation.
The main caveat is that the small-overlap frontal-impact test was not yet assessed in the IIHS review, so you should weigh that uncertainty if crash performance is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2014 Dodge Durango or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.88% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.45/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 stands out for its roomy, refined, technologically sophisticated character, with expert praise for its strong technology score and broad trim range.
The bottom line: If you want a used Durango with strong space, comfort, and tech at a softer price point, the 2014 is a sensible place to focus. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can use the current market softness to shop patiently and target the lower end of the range, but you should balance that against the model’s reliability and ownership-cost concerns.
