Why it stands out
The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu stands out as a midsize sedan that blends comfort, technology, and performance in a way that makes it more than just a basic family car. Chevrolet’s engineers deserve credit for steering that’s tight and sporty at high speeds while demanding little effort at slow speeds and when attempting to park, which gives the Malibu an easygoing feel in daily driving without giving up composure when the pace picks up. The result is a car that aims to be efficient and approachable while still feeling polished behind the wheel.
That balance is part of what makes the 2014 Malibu appealing to buyers. The summary describes it as an efficient 4-door promising enviable levels of comfort, technology and performance, and owner feedback reinforces that impression with praise for excellent fuel economy, a quiet ride, and comfort for family trips. It is also often seen as a strong value for the price. On the other hand, some owners have raised concerns about warranty issues and the absence of certain features such as fog lights, so its appeal is strongest for shoppers who prioritize comfort, efficiency, and a well-rounded driving experience over a long list of extras.

Excellent car exactly what I want. Sorry about warranty issues.

I love all the car features not over whelming with controls nice and simple. 2.5 Inline 4 Cylinder feels like a 6 and excellent gas mileage. Come with a spoiler and a turn signal painted mirrors normally found on a LT model. Vehicle was a great value less than 10 Grand with 42k miles on it. Just missing fog lights easily can be added latter.

I like that the car has automatic stop when I am stopped for awhile that really helps on the gas. I like that it has automatic start for the cold winters. I also like the 2 year worry free maintenance on my car that saves me a lot of money.

Excellent all around quality. Quiet ride, responsive engine, great looking car. Great car with lots of room for long family trips and impressive gas mileage for a car this size. This is a very good quality car and is a joy to drive.

The cost-effectiveness notes add that it comes with free factory-scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 24,000 miles.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Chevrolet Malibu?
At 52.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and any signs of prior repair. Because the market includes a sizable number of cars with accident history, condition matters more than usual, especially if you want to preserve resale value and avoid hidden repair costs. Focus on how the car drives, whether the electronics work properly, and whether the maintenance record supports the asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
Trim level: The entry-level LS comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity, OnStar, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, and cruise control, while the 1LT adds the Chevrolet MyLink 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite radio and voice-recognition technology, heated mirrors, and floor mats. The 2LT adds dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, driver’s power lumbar adjustment, and 18-inch alloys, while the 1LTZ brings leather upholstery, unique alloy wheels, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and heated 8-way power-adjustable front seats. The 2LTZ adds a power moonroof and the upgraded engine. The best-value trim is often the 1LT if you want the core tech upgrades without moving too far up the price ladder.
Powertrain: The Malibu is strictly front-wheel drive and uses two distinct 4-cylinder engines. The base 2.5-liter engine makes 196 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque and pairs with a 6-speed automatic, while the turbocharged 2.0-liter makes 259 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque with the same transmission. The base engine is tuned for efficiency, and the turbo engine adds noticeably stronger acceleration.
Safety package: The Malibu earned an overall 5-star rating from NHTSA and a Good ranking in all IIHS tests. Standard safety equipment includes 10 airbags, and available features include rear-side airbags, side blind-zone alert, a rear-view camera, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning. The tested 2LTZ also included forward-collision warning.
Infotainment: The MyLink system uses a 7-inch touchscreen on the 1LT and includes text-message reading and response, iPhone-specific Eyes Free functionality, and app integration such as Pandora and Stitcher. The system is described as easy to use, with quick phone pairing and intuitive icons. Navigation was available, and OnStar Directions & Connections was complimentary for the first 6 months of ownership.
Fuel efficiency: The base 2.5-liter engine is rated at 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway, while the turbocharged 2.0-liter returns 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. The expert review also notes that the base engine delivers some of the best fuel economy in the class.
Which 2014 Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?
The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in 6 trim levels: LS, 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, 1LTZ, 2LTZ.
Here's the short version:
LS: This is the simplest way into the Malibu, and it gives you the core sedan experience with Bluetooth, OnStar, cruise control, and a height-adjustable driver’s seat. Choose it if you want the lowest-cost path into the model and don’t need the extra convenience and tech features found higher up.
1LT: This is the trim that most clearly improves the day-to-day experience, thanks to the MyLink 7-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, voice recognition, heated mirrors, and floor mats. If you want the best balance of equipment and value, this is the trim to focus on first.
2LT: This trim adds a more upscale feel with dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, driver’s power lumbar adjustment, and 18-inch alloys. It suits you if comfort and convenience matter more than keeping the purchase price as low as possible.
3LT: This version is essentially a 2LT with a more powerful standard engine, so it makes sense if you want the stronger powertrain without stepping all the way to the premium trims.
1LTZ: This is the premium-grade Malibu, with leather upholstery, unique alloy wheels, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and heated 8-way power-adjustable front seats. It’s the right pick if you want a more upscale cabin and are willing to pay for it.
2LTZ: This trim adds a power moonroof and the upgraded engine, making it the most fully equipped version in the lineup. It’s the one to consider if you want the strongest mix of luxury and performance features.
The safety package note is straightforward: the Malibu’s safety equipment is strong overall, and the tested 2LTZ included forward-collision warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Chevrolet Malibu?
The market looks moderately favorable for selective buyers right now.
- Deal availability: 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 762 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.67% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 52.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,549, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?
The current average of $7,741 sits slightly below last year's $7,953.
That kind of price movement suggests the Malibu has softened a bit, which can make it easier for you to buy now but may also mean future resale gains are limited unless you choose a well-kept example. If you plan to sell later, condition and maintenance history will matter a lot, especially because buyers in this segment tend to compare value closely. A clean, well-optioned Malibu should still attract interest, but you should expect resale to track the broader market rather than outperform it.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu safe?
The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu earns an overall five-star rating from NHTSA and a Good ranking in all IIHS tests.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Malibu’s safety equipment includes 10 standard airbags, with available rear-side airbags, side blind-zone alert, a rear-view camera, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning. The tested 2LTZ also included forward-collision warning. That said, some of the more advanced driver-assistance features are not standard across the lineup, so you should check the exact trim and equipment list on any used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.67% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 stands out for its balance of comfort, technology, and performance, along with strong safety results and a well-rounded driving feel.
The bottom line: If you want a used Malibu with strong owner satisfaction, solid safety, and a price that has eased a bit, the 2014 is a sensible choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, shop carefully for a clean, well-maintained example and prioritize the trims that give you the features you’ll actually use.
