Overview

Chevy’s 2011 Express full-size passenger van, though a relic of the mid-nineties, still packs a lot of power, passenger room, and cargo capacity. Of course, this 8- to 15-seat people hauler sports far more gadgets and gizmos, either standard or available, than do its forebears. As is traditional with this type of vehicle, the 2011 Express should see no changes from its 2010 tweaking, which included a standard six-speed automatic transmission for the 6.0-liter V8, a marginal up-powering of the 5.3-liter V8, and available remote engine start.
The 2011 Express should once more be available in base LS and up-featured LT trims, with both available in either 1500, 2500, and 3500 versions. Some interesting variations for this big wagon include the 3500 in a 15-passenger Extended variation, the 2500 and 3500’s standard 12-passenger seating configuration, and available all-wheel-drive (AWD) for the 1500 trims. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is the standard drivetrain configuration for the 2011 Express. As usual, Ford’s E-Series Wagon and Dodge/Mercedes-Benz’s Sprinter compete directly with the 2011 Express.
Both the 2011 Express 1500 LS and LT trims boast a 310-hp, 5.3-liter V8 with variable valve timing and E85 Flex Fuel capability. The standard four-speed transmission allows the 1500 lineup to put out 334 lb-ft of torque, good enough for 6,200 pounds of trailer towing capability, as well as 13/17 mpg. The Express 2500 and 3500 variations carry a standard 6.0-liter V8, also with variable valve timing and Flex Fuel capability. The recently introduced standard six-speed automatic transmission allows this big V8 to pound out 323 hp and 373 lb-ft of torque and tow some 7,600 pounds when properly equipped. Fuel figures are unavailable for the 6.0-liter V8.
Basic and utilitarian, the 2011 Express LS trims are again expected to feature such appearance and cabin doo-dads as 17-inch steel wheels, vinyl upholstery, front bucket seats, air conditioning, and an AM/FM stereo with two speakers. The LT trims add on standard power windows and door locks, cloth upholstery, rear-seat climate control, tilt-wheel steering, and remote keyless entry, as well as front and rear floormats. Options include most of the LT’s standard features on the LS trims, and both are offered with remote engine start, 17-inch chrome steel or aluminum wheels, heated and power-adjustable outside mirrors, single- or 6-CD player, sliding rear passenger-side door, power-adjustable front seats, heavy-duty trailer tow package, and rear window defogger.
Safety-wise, size and heft are expected to be complemented by the 2011 Express’ expected standard four-wheel ABS, traction and stability control, three-row head airbags, daytime running lights, and remote anti-theft alarm. Additionally, turn-signal-integrated mirrors are offered as an optional safety item across the lineup.
Owners of the 2010 Express find mileage to be understandably dismal, while some chintzy interior materials can also be a bit off-putting, as can the lack of several traditionally tech-savvy options. Room, power, reliability, and utility, however, keep owners satisfied with this venerable van.
