CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mazda MAZDA3
overall

Summary
With 655 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,160, 31.3% of 2017 Mazda MAZDA3s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.
48.9% of 2017 MAZDA3 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out as a compact car that blends style, value, and driving enjoyment. For 2017, it received its first real update since this generation debuted back in 2013, with design changes inside and out and new G-Vectoring Control, making an already strong package even more appealing and fun to drive. Mazda’s reputation for stylish cars with beautiful interiors comes through here as well, and the Mazda3 is presented as a car that looks and feels more expensive than it is.
It also has broad appeal because it offers plenty of features even in the base version, along with well-priced options that let buyers tailor the car to their budget. Owner feedback reinforces the Mazda3’s sporty feel, responsive acceleration, fuel efficiency, stylish interior, and user-friendly technology. At the same time, some drivers want more features and systems to better match competitors, so the car’s strengths are balanced by a sense that it may not be the most generously equipped choice in the class.

The vehicle was priced well with all the features anyone could ever need. The interior seems to be better quality than others in its class over all a good made vehicle.

When my Honda died some 10 years ago or so, I somehow stumbled upon the Mazda3 (I think it was the Car & Driver reviews), and bought one. That car is the most fabulous car in its price range that I have ever driven. I adored it. I bought a 2008 sGT, and drove it with nothing but the greatest pleasure until it gave up its life for me about a month ago. There will be no coming back from this injury, but I promise you, I am currently looking for this car, and ONLY this car, for my next car, and however many next cars I have after this one. Ne plus ultra.

This car certainly has a LOT of zip, and thats not even using the Sport Mode! Plus, it gets great mpg and has a good shot of making it to 250k miles.

Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary highlights a car that many drivers find dependable in daily use, with praise centered on its sporty feel, fuel efficiency, and user-friendly technology. The expert driving notes reinforce that impression by describing a responsive engine, smooth highway manners, and a composed ride that stays controlled even when conditions get difficult.
The cost-effectiveness notes also point to a strong ownership proposition, with a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, and 3 years/36,000 miles of roadside assistance. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is simply making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by harder use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?
At 51.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had prior bodywork or higher mileage. Focus on condition, maintenance records, tire wear, brake feel, and whether the electronics and safety systems work as expected. Because the model has a strong reputation for driving enjoyment, it’s worth making sure the specific car still feels tight and well cared for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Sport includes daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring, dynamic stability control, traction control, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and the Mazda Connect infotainment system. Touring adds 18-inch wheels, automatic on/off headlights, heated side mirrors, dual-zone climate control, a power driver’s seat with lumbar, heated front seats, leatherette sport seats, rain-sensing wipers, Smart City Brake Support, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Grand Touring adds the more powerful engine, LED fog lights, a rear spoiler, a moonroof, perforated leather-trimmed sport seats, and upgraded audio and display tech.
- Powertrain: The car uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque in the lower trims, while the Grand Touring gets a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are available with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, and the more powerful engine trades a bit of efficiency for stronger performance.
- Safety package: Touring and Grand Touring trims add advanced blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support, Mazda's version of automatic emergency braking. The base trim does not include that full suite.
- Infotainment: The system uses a 7-inch full-color touchscreen, Mazda Connect, Bluetooth handsfree phone and audio streaming, voice command, AM/FM/HD Radio, SMS text-message audio delivery and reply, 2 USB ports, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are not available.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 27 mpg city and 37 highway with the manual or 28/37 with the automatic. The 2.5-liter engine is rated at 25/34 with the manual or 27/36 with the automatic, and the available i-ELOOP package can improve the automatic to 28/37.
Which 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want a well-equipped car. You get the core Mazda3 experience, the Mazda Connect system, and the standard safety basics, but you give up the extra comfort and driver-assistance features found higher up the range.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a lot of everyday comfort and safety equipment without jumping to the top price. The heated seats, dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support make it the sweet spot.
- Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the strongest engine and the most upscale feel. It adds the 2.5-liter engine, upgraded audio, a moonroof, leather-trimmed sport seats, and the full-color active driving display.
Standard safety equipment includes multiple airbags, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, hill launch assist, dynamic stability control, traction control, and a reversing camera. Touring and Grand Touring add the advanced driver-assistance features.

- Inventory: There are 687 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.05% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 51.4% of listings are accident-free.

What is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $13,291 sits slightly above last year's $12,898.
That upward move suggests the market still sees value in this model year, which can help support resale strength if you buy carefully. If you keep the car in good condition and maintain it well, you should be in a better position when it’s time to sell. The relatively tight spread between the year-round low and high also suggests pricing discipline in the market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 has not been fully rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It has so far received five-star ratings in side crash testing and four-star ratings in rollover testing.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include multiple airbags, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, hill launch assist, dynamic stability control, traction control, and a reversing camera. Touring and Grand Touring trims add advanced blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support, Mazda's version of automatic emergency braking.
The main caveat is that the car had not yet been fully tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety at the time of this evaluation, so you should pay close attention to the equipment on the specific trim you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 51.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.05% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds a meaningful update for the year, including new G-Vectoring Control and design changes inside and out.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,082, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,291 average.
- It delivers engaging driving feel without turning harsh or tiring.
The 2017 is the better pick if you want the updated version with stronger appeal and you’re comfortable paying a bit more for it. If your priority is saving money and you still want the Mazda3’s core driving character, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly path.
