Overview

The Chevrolet Impala has a long history as a big, American, rear-drive boat, but in the mid-2000s, the automaker shook things up in a big way. Gone was the last hurrah Impala SS of the mid-1990s, and in its place, a front-wheel drive sedan showed up. Chevy still offered an SS model, but it was V6-powered, front-wheel drive, and less exciting looking overall. For the car’s ninth generation, Chevy jammed a V8 under the hood, but left it as a front-wheel drive car. That said, it was as quick as its rear-drive predecessor and more fuel-efficient, too. The Impala SS ultimately bowed out after the 2009 model year and has not been a part of the Chevrolet lineup since.
