Building on the popularity of its boxy xB wagon and sporty tC coupe, Scion introduced the all-new five-door xD subcompact hatchback for the 2008 model year. It replaces the xA hatchback, which Scion discontinued after the 2006 model year.
Built on the same platform as the Toyota Yaris, the xD is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 128 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, while a four-speed automatic transmission is available as an option. Antilock brakes with Electronic Brake Distribution and Brake Assist are standard.
Despite its affordable price, the xD is available with a lot of nice, even unexpected features as standard equipment. A first aid kit, for instance, is standard, as is a chrome exhaust tip, multi-reflector halogen lights, and a choice of three wheel-cover designs.
Inside is a stylish look, with a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, amber instrument panel illumination, front sport bucket seats, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, air conditioning, a digital clock, and a six-speaker Pioneer AM/FM stereo system with a CD player and iPod connectivity.
The xD also comes with a sliding and reclining rear seat, which is borrowed from the five-door Yaris.
The Scion is also available with a number of accessories that enable drivers to personalize the car, including a rear spoiler, a navigation system, a two-tone steering wheel, and a sport shift knob available in a variety of colors, as well as a premium Pioneer stereo system that can be personalized with a variety of skins.

(15 reviews)Stylish, solid car, lots of fun to drive. Excellent acceleration and handling. Premium sound system. Excellent gas mileage. Comfortable and extremely reliable. We've owned it for 20 months and have never had a mechanical problem. We purchased an extended service ontract when we bought the car that we never had to use.
Acceleration is good for the engine size and power. It puts u back in your seat when shifting from 1st to 2nd.braking power could be improved, perhaps disc brakes in the back instead of drum. handling is superb, i can take turns just about as fast as i think. the build is ok, things needed are better stock products like rims, lights, and brakes. it looks to plain unless you do mods to it. the interior is great. its small on the outside but spacious inside. color accents inside match the exterior color. cost is great u def get more for your money its a wise investment. gas milage is awesome. ive topped out on 40 mpgs on the highways and made a tank of gas last for 460 miles. maintenance isnt to bad. routine oil changes and the occasionaly brake change. overall the car is good, could be better, but that varies from driver to driver.
Well, what else is there to say? Its a small, yet spacious four door hatchback. Ooops, did I say the dreaded H-word? Well, I like hatchbacks, after all, aren't SUVs just big station wagons? The performance is amazing for such a small car. Its got a 1.8L engine that is shared by other cars such as the (now deceased) Celica and the Lotus Elise. Its not the fastest thing on the road, but it definitely goes. And the fuel economy is not too shabby either. The crazy thing is also, is how quiet the engine is. Only under medium/hard acceleration will you really hear it. We have done some in town, and highway driving, and can't seem to get under 31MPG. Of course, we have a manual transmission and we don't go over 70MPH, so, I am sure that these are contributing factors. Oh and we use the Standard Cruise Control quite a bit. Let's talk about seating. Its higher than a normal car, which makes it seem like we are driving a mini-SUV. The driving position is good for getting a feel of the road, and the steering wheel is very firm. The speedometer/tachometer is setup like a speedo and is very cool. The only thing lacking is the absence of a middle armrest, front and back. But, this is easy to deal without. Finally, what car is complete without a kicking standard 200 watt stereo w/ 8 speakers and a hookup to play/control your Ipod w/? And, its satellite ready too. Nice touch. :) I hope that this helps someone interested in the xD. Its the lovable car, that was an unexpected surprise. Really, we thought that we would be buying a Honda Fit and ended up w/ the xD. Who woulda thunk?
The Performance could have been better. It does not have a hight acceleration. But we all know Toyota builds cars that "rock". The apearance is awsome! The gas mileage is grat and is a fun car to be in and ride.
I love its tight turning. This car has taken me safely through big bear and yet is very helpful as a daily driver, picking up youth for church! I really thank God for this car! Hard to get the best gas mileage because it is enjoyable to accelerate quickly on the freeways!
