Following the debut of the new Cummins turbodiesel engine in 2007, the heavy-duty Ram 3500 receives minimal changes for this model year. A new SXT trim is exclusive to the Mega Cab, replacing the SLT finish on this extended body style.

Reviewers have commented that a lot changes when truck buyers graduate from the Ram 2500 to the 3500 dually. There are both positives and negatives. The main benefit: towing power. When the truck is fitted with the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel, which most buyers select, towing maxes out at an impressive 16,350 pounds. However, the addition of the two rear wheels and tighter suspension firms up the highway ride to the point of eventual discomfort for some, and the 3500 is not exactly capable of easily navigating tight streets and thick traffic.

The Ram family of trucks received a styling refresh for the 2006 model year, which updated the interior and brought forth new features and options. Ram buyers are offered a great deal of flexibility in selecting one of these heavy-duty trucks, thanks to a variety of interchangeable cab sizes, drivetrains, trim levels, and engines. And all trims beyond the base-level ST are generously equipped. One exception to the Ram's flexibility is the absence of a long bed (8 feet) option with the Mega Cab. Many owners may find the rear quarters of the intermediate size Quad Cab a bit tight, but they'll have to settle if they want the long bed.

The 3500 is divided into twenty-five individual configurations, with only a few obstacles to total customization. The Regular Cab is not available with the upscale Laramie trim, while the stretched Mega Cab cannot be had with the pedestrian ST trim. The midsize Quad Cab is available with ST, SLT, and Laramie finishes. The ST trim level includes minimal features, highlighted by air-conditioning and a CD player. The SLT brings some additional comfort and convenience items, while the Laramie adds luxuries like steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, a power driver's seat, leather upholstery, and dual-zone climate control.

Like the 2500, the Ram 3500 is available with two powerplant options. A 5.7-liter V8 comes standard, making 345 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual is included with this engine. Optional on the ST and SLT, and standard on the Laramie, is a five-speed automatic. The optional 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel is an inline six generating 350 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. With this engine, buyers have a choice between a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
