In response to the Charger cutting into its sales, the 2008 Dodge Magnum adopts some of its stylistic features, particularly for its performance-oriented SRT-8. The hopped-up wagon gets even more aggressive in the front end, with a lowered grille, additional chrome elements, and sleeker, narrower headlamps. The SRT-8 adopts the large hood scoop straight from the Charger.

The powerful exterior's bulk is complemented by one of four powerful engine choices. Base SE models feature a 2.7-liter, 190-hp V6, and as you move up through SXT and R/T, you can choose from a 2.5-liter, 250-hp V6 or a 5.4-liter, 340-hp Hemi V8. The sportiest trim, the SRT-8, hits 0-60 in less than five seconds with its 6.1-liter, 425-hp Hemi V8. This V8 is also the first in North America to feature cylinder deactivation for improved fuel economy. Transmission choices are either a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed automatic with manual mode. Rear-wheel drive is standard, though AWD is available for the SXT and R/T.

Interior updates for the 2008 Magnum include a restyled dash and extra chrome trim (or more carbon fiber trim in the SRT-8). A new radio sports MyGIG and an optional iPod hookup. Another new option is satellite TV. On the safety side, seat-mounted airbags join the front and front-side ones, and a tire monitor is standard on all trims. Base models start with 17-inch tires, full power features, and a CD player. The SXT adds a power driver's seat and more safety features, such as ABS brakes and traction and stability control. The more performance-oriented R/T offers larger wheels, larger brakes, dual exhaust pipes, and leather seats.

Don't forget that the powerful 2008 Magnum also serves as a functional family wagon, with plenty of interior space, front and rear cupholders, and rear seats that split-fold flat for extra cargo space. The roofline is angled upward so that the rear seats can be placed stadium style, and the cargo area comes with a removable cooler and storage pockets. It represents a nice compromise for parents who need the functionality of a wagon, but crave the performance of the smaller, sportier Charger.
