Winning rave reviews for its roomy cabin, smooth handling, seamless transmission, and overall style, the brand-new 2007 Mazda CX-9 looks like a larger CX-7 (with 5 extra inches in wheelbase and 2.5 inches in width, it seats seven in three rows), but actually takes its platform and powertrain from the Ford Edge. Entering the market as Mazda's largest vehicle, the 2007 CX-9 is available in either front-wheel drive or automatic all-wheel drive. The system defaults to the front wheels but can deliver up to 50% of torque to the rear wheels. It does not come with low-range gearing, however, and should not be taken off-road.

Taking cues from Mazda's reputation for sport vehicles, the CX-9 uses a sport-tuned suspension, which can feel a bit rough on bumpy roads. Drivers love the outward appearance, with sloped windshield, high beltline, and softer edges than boxier SUVs. Its rear spoiler, alloy wheels, dual exhaust, and three-spoked steering wheel add further sporty touches. Under the hood sits the Edge's 3.5-liter V6, which delivers 263 hp and 249 lb-ft of torque. The real highlight is the Aisin 6-speed Sport automatic with manual shift, which makes nearly imperceptible gear transitions.

The 2007 CX-9 comes in Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trims. The Sport starts with power windows, locks, and mirrors, cruise control, and a CD player. The Touring adds leather seats, heated power front seats, and Bluetooth. The Grand Touring includes memory settings, mirrors with turn signals, remote start, xenon headlamps, and rain-sensing wipers. The CX-9 earns five stars in safety tests, thanks to a boatload of equipment, including traction and stability control, ABS brakes, and dual front-side and side curtain airbags for all rows. A navigation system with rearview camera is optional. Other options include a DVD player, sunroof, and the highly praised Bose sound system.

The CX-9's roomy cabin fits seven adults easily, with both second and third rows split-folding flat (60/40 and 50/50 respectively). The second row also slides back and forth 5 inches to provide more legroom. Cargo capacity starts at 17 cubic feet, and with the various rows folded down expands to 47 or 100 cubic feet. The wide-opening rear passenger doors allow for easier third-row access, though they can cause problems in parking lots.

The major complaint about the 2007 Mazda CX-9 is its 18/24 fuel economy and so-so highway acceleration. Otherwise, this stylish crossover receives high marks for its responsive handling, long list of standard features, and roomy third row. Its blend of versatility with sporty good looks makes soccer Moms finally proud to wear that moniker.
