Overview
The launch of the muscular, lightning-fast MAZDASPEED6 sport sedan in 2006 followed the introduction in the U.S. of other tricked-out high-performance MAZDASPEED cars, including the 2003 MAZDASPEED Protege and the 2005 MAZDASPEED MX-5 Miata. Based on the Mazda6 Sport Sedan, the MAZDASPEED6 kicked up the performance factor a notch thanks to a turbocharged 2.3-liter double-overhead-cam four-cylinder engine with direct gas injection, which delivered fuel directly into each chamber. As a result, the engine produced an impressive 270 horsepower, as well as extra torque for plenty of pedal off the mark. The exterior of the MAZDASPEED6 featured an enhanced front end with a sculpted hood that subtly rose to provide room for the engine's top-mounted intercooler, and an air duct for the intercooler integrated into the front grille. In the rear, a spoiler and more aerodynamic bumpers provided a more aggressive look. Inside, standard features included high-bolstered front bucket seats, automatic climate control, front side window demisters, power door locks, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, alloy pedals, and a Bose seven-speaker audio system. The MAZDASPEED6 was available in Sport and Grand Touring trim packages. To the standard list of features, the Grand Touring package added leather seats (heated in the front), leather door trim, dual power heated mirrors, an advanced keyless entry system, electroluminiscent gauges, and a power moonroof. As might be expected, the MAZDASPEED6 received high marks from both drivers and critics, some of whom called the car nothing less than impressive. Its power, handling, styling, and interior appointments were all cited as positive points.

Total sleeper. This car may appear to be a sporty looking grocery getter but its really an EVO-Eater!

This is a sports car wearing a family sedan's clothing. It flies under the radar, and it flies quickly. The steering is very quick and precise, the power is ample and addictive, the grip is phenomenal. All that in a package that can take 5 adults and their luggage on a comfortable road trip. I hear it is pretty capable in rough weather, too. Living in California, I don't get to test that claim often.

Awesome build quality, paint is the best I've seen on any car, heated seats, sound system, 0-60 time is amazing, excellent handling, air bags everywhere and good braking combined with fuel efficiency and all wheel drive. What more could you want fro a family sedan?

It has power and performance mixed with comfort and style. I'm 24 years old and it suits my lifestyle perfectly. I've got room to take friends with me on road trips and I've got power to hang with STi and Evo's on the expressway. The car is a sleepers dream. It's 274 factory horsepower is definitely noticeable when you want it to be. It's completely tunable and a performance bargain. These cars were so under-advertised that hardly anybody knows they're out there. The direct injection, 2.3L makes this an amazing car already, but adding the AWD and 6 speed manual to the mix really gave this car a great feel. Anybody looking for a powerful car without sacrificing comfort, definitely check into the Mazdaspeed 6.
