2006 Dodge Charger test drive
overall

Dodge has brought the Charger nameplate back in the form of a full-size sedan, but can it live up to its legendary legacy?
After a nearly 20-year hiatus, the Charger returns to Dodge’s lineup, this time as a full-size sedan instead of the sporty-but-large coupe we saw last in the late 1980s. The 2006 Charger has muscular lines and Dodge’s signature bullseye grille. There a couple of engine choices, including a 6.1-liter Hemi V8 that produces up to 425 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. The Charger is muscular and exciting in its sportier trims, but can it compete in a world where fuel economy and space are at a premium?

This wonderful car has been a great addition to our family! She drives beautifully whether on the highway or the country roads where she hugs them without fail. We are looking forward to our next Charger if Dodge continues to build them or the Challenger.

I purchased the 2006 Dodge Charger RT new in 2006 and I have to say it has treated me well over the years it just turned 100,000 and still runs and looks great. I am pleased the charger has held up so well, I'm not easy on it. Great acceleration and braking the car handles hard corners so well for a big vehicle it is hard to believe. After all these years I still enjoy driving the Charger.

Only had the car for less than a week, so I don't know about the Reliabilty or the maintenance costs, but everything else is five Stars! Only exception is the rear seats. I am 6'5", so my drivers seat is pretty much all the way to the rear. Doesn't leave much room for the passenger behind me. Luckily my daughters are small enough to still be confortable. :) I bought the car used with 14K miles on it. I knew it had some minor electrical problems when I bought it, but I'm working on those. (See "Cons" above for more recent additions) The car handles great. The steering is very smooth. The sound of the car is amazing, and gets turned heads all the time! The car is powerful. When I want to burn rubber, I have no doubt that I can. Even times when I'd rather not (ie cop right behind me) it still does at times. But that's just driver error. I am still getting used to a Charger Daytona Hemi, vs my old Magnum v6. :) The look is great, and the car itself, just owning it, has peaked my interest in automotive. I now find myself in Napa, and other car stores, shopping for parts just because. I just bought new 20" rims and brand new tires for the car, so the looks has just improved even more than it already was, and the handling should improve too. The braking is a little mushy, but that may be the case that I need to replace them. Even when breaking traction, I still felt in control of the car, and can handle J-turns, etc. fluidly. Nothing that I don't love about this car yet. I'm sure the maintenanc costs will be a little bit high, as it's not your average family car, but that was expected when I bought it. All in all, I am looking forward to owning this car!

Performance - It has great acceleration, good braking and handling. Its corners not quite as tight as I would like for a performance car, but its cornering is great compared to cars in its class. It also makes a great sound when it starts. Features - roomy, including the trunk. The interior is nice and although its rear-wheel drive, I feel safer in this car than in any other car I've driven. Appearance - Aggressive, eye-catching and it just looks fast. Which it is. Fun Factor - This car has it. Lots of it. Cons - Its mpg is generally less than 18 in the city and only exceeds 19 on extended interstate driving (more than an hour). I have gotten as much as 23, which is good for a sports car, but just not great in general.
