Overview

The popularity of the 2004 model led to few changes for the 2005 Toyota Prius. Toyota furthered the success of this new engine type by repurposing the engine for a hybrid Lexus, the RX400h.

The Prius ran into a minor setback in 2005 when its cars started stalling at speeds upwards of 45 miles per hour. The cars would still run on battery power, but lost speed rapidly, making for a potentially deadly situation for the car and its passengers. 33 cases were reported, and a programming error that had been fixed in a prior recall was cited as the root cause of the problem.

107,897 Priuses were sold in the US in 2005.
