After a one year hiatus, the GMC Envoy emerged from its cocoon in 2002 a completely new vehicle. Besides the re-done exterior, the Envoy sports a powerful new 4.2 L, 270 hp I6 engine with 4 speed automatic transmission. The midsize SUV comes in 4 trims: SLE 2WD, SLE 4WD, SLT 2WD, and SLT 4WD. As for gas mileage, expect 15-16 mpg in the city and 21-22 on the highway. All 4 trims have 4 doors and seat 5. In addition, the Envoy delivers standard air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, power seats, cd player, and ABS brakes. The SLT adds standard leather seats. Maximum towing capacity ranges from 6200-6400 lbs. Overall, drivers agree that the 2002 GMC Envoy's makeover gave it key features that helped it stay competitive in the midsize SUV market, especially with the new engine and styling. However, critics don't think GMC did enough to put the Envoy at the top of the food chain. Steering and handling could use some tweaking and ultimately put the 2002 GMC Envoy a notch below the competition.
