Overview

Aimed at a younger market, the 2001 Pontiac Grand Am tries to emphasize its sporty performance and styling, overall affordability and good fuel economy (22/32 mpg), and practical family car interior. It seems to have worked, because although the Grand Am in general has questionable reliability, it remains GM's number one compact car in the U.S. market.
The biggest change for 2001 is the loss of the SE2 trim. That leaves SE, SE1, GT, and GT1 in both four-door sedan and two-door coupe models. Other minor changes include updated sound systems in all cars, and new fabrics and wheels. The SE trims come standard with a 2.4-liter, 150-hp I4, while the GTs feature the 3.4, 175-hp V6. A 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic are available with the SEs, but only the automatic comes with the V6 engines in the GTs. The base models are well equipped, with standard ABS, traction control, intermittent wipers, power locks and mirrors, lighted entry and a security system. GTs add a rear spoiler and sports-tuned suspension and bigger wheels.
The 2001 Grand Am aims to please those looking for a family car, but not willing to sacrifice sports performance. Indeed, drivers praise the V6 engine power, pickup, and excellent handling of the Grand Am, emphasizing its kick and spirited feel behind the wheel. They also love the overall "head-turning" looks, fuel economy, and fold-down rear seats to expand trunk capacity. The most notable complaint is quality and reliability, with particular mention of the poorly designed brakes, which seem to need service too frequently. Other drivers ask for more horsepower and more rear legroom.

I love this car. It is the fourth Grand am I have owned and I would own more if they made them still. This car is a great family car. It is my baby. I have taken very good care of this car and plan to keep it for a while.

GT1 75th Anniversary Edition. Awesome car for the price. Already moderately customized; Modified Borla exhaust, lowered suspension, strut tower braces front and rear, short ram intake utilizing ram air, 10% tint all around, BFGoodrich g-Force Sport summer tires, debadged, to name a few. Great power and handling, stock brakes tend to have warped rotors (front) but I'll either get drilled/slotted stock rotors, or do the Corvette brake upgrade. Somewhat high maintenance, expensive repairs occasionally, but overall and awesome car

This is my 3rd Grand AM, never had a problem with a single one. This car has great acceleration, it's good on gas, great apperance, lots of custom parts available, easy to maintain, handles well, very safe, & all around a very good car. Drive one!

Decent car - lacks horsepower compared to most cars in its class but has served me well for over six years.
