Still one of the top ten selling cars in the U.S., the 2000 Pontiac Grand Am benefits from the redesigned exterior, interior, and chassis it received in 1999. The four-door sedan or two-door coupe comes in five different trims -- SE, SE1, SE2, GT, and GT1, with the GT representing sportier models with sports-tuned suspension, rear spoiler, and body cladding. The 2000 Grand Am gets a new 5-speed manual transmission standard with the 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder, Twin Cam, 150-hp engine. The 4-speed auto tran, standard on the V6 models, is now an option on the I4s. The four-cylinder engines are standard with the SE and SE1, while the 3.4-liter, 170-hp V6 is standard on the SE2, GT, and GT1 (on GT models, the horsepower is upped to 175). The 2.4 engine also gets a redesigned intake manifold to improve gas mileage. Another new addition for 2000 are special option packages for the V6 models.
Trying to focus on the Pontiac performance branding, the 2000 Grand Am features a restyled cockpit interior with deeply inset gauges, and a stiffer body for more confident handling. It seems to have paid off, with the new Grand Am getting better reviews for road performance, engine power, pickup, and sporty styling from owners and experts alike. Drivers like the V6, saying the 2000 Grand Am is much more fun to drive. The dash layout and large trunk also receive compliments. Constant repairs, coolant leaks due to cracked manifolds, and worn brake pads are a just a few of the major complaints about the Grand Am. Some wish for better fuel economy and more overall interior room.
