Used 1999 Ford Explorer for Sale near Phoenix, AZ

Ford did a good job on the 1999-2001 V8 Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers. V6 transmissions are a little weak if you work them hard, but the V8 powertrain as a whole is very strong and reliable.

My explorer had a 4.0 V6 that I didn't like as an automobile. .However, I did like it as a lawn ornament.There were 120,000 miles on it The engine was very unresponsive. The handling was very ok. It could turn on a dime. It was fords version of a "crapy Jeep Wrangler. It was built very poorly and I was always going to get repairs on it. I paid $1,700 for the ford ...... thats how much that they should have paid me! I had put over $2,500 into repairs for this car.(Classic Ford stuff) In the end, I was only able to sell it for $1,300 one year later.

Did OK but ran into a value issue at 116,000 miles which is pretty bad. My options were replacing both heads for $1,600 + of Marvel Mystery Oil. I choose the latter which got the engine to last another 15,000 miles, but the 'Check engine light is back on and inspection is due... I need a new car and am unlikely to get another Ford after this experience. It's too bad, aside from the engine problems it was a good truck

I got it in 2003, and it needed some TLC. I think it's safe to say that it got just that. I've since overhauled the sound system with Rockford Fosgate speakers and subs and a Kenwood amp. The engine moves a little easier thanks to a homemade intake, Flowmaster muffler, and Proform electric fan. I dropped the suspension 2", and swapped in multi-leaf springs from a Ranger. Later came 255/70/15 Falken tires, Mazda B-series rims and an Explorer Express swaybar kit. The interior now has cloth bucket seats from a Mustang, and sports a nice Hurst shifter. To put an end to the one-tire-fire, I put in a 3.73/Limited-Slip axle.
