About 1997 Volkswagen Passat
Overview

In anticipation of a vehicle redesign in 1998, Volkswagen discontinued its entry-level Passat GLS trim package (with its four-cylinder engine) for 1997. However, the Passat was still available in a higher-end GLX trim version, which came with a 2.8-liter, 172-hp V6 engine, as well as the TDI (turbo direct injection) model that came with a 1.9-liter, 90-hp diesel engine. Both engines were linked to a five-speed manual transmission; a four-speed automatic was optional for the GLX.
Standard features for the Passat included front airbags for the driver and passenger, CFC-free air conditioning, power brakes, power steering, power windows, power door locks, cruise control, daytime running lights, heated exterior mirrors, an audio anti-theft alarm system, and an eight-speaker AM/FM/cassette audio system. The GLX added anti-lock brakes, while leather seats and a sunroof were available as options for both trim packages.
Generally, the 1997 Passat got positive reviews from drivers, who appreciated the car's styling, handling, comfort, and roominess. In addition, the Passat diesel's gas economy was noted as a positive point by drivers. Maintenance costs were among the negatives cited by drivers.

After owning for 5 years with no trouble at all ! Performance after chipping it with a simple £75 tuning chip,Reformed this everyday car into a sports car,Also adding another easy 200 miles to a full tank of mixed vegi oil and normal diesel of which it ran on happily. Repairs needed were only that of new battery and a set of four new alloys and 2 sets of tyres. Costs of running all depended how much free used vegi oil i could be bothered to filter. Fun factor was reasonable with the low down torque, Enabled easy overtaking.

-Fabulous gas mileage 37-43 mpg -sleek, yet funny looking design -turbo diesel helps it pick up and go -quirky rattles and road noise typical of VWs -solid build -expensive to repair (it's a VW) -this is a high mileage, economy car -comfy ride -would recommend most TDI's (although 2000 is a bad year I hear) -Has treated me well, has not yet broken down -need to remember to get timing belt changed so you don't blow your engine up...but that is on any car. -but don't just listen to me...do your research!!!!

got it for free, so its hard not to appreciate. the twisting knobs to adjust the seats is so annoying, though. i like the firmness of the handbrake. can't get it on the road yet, tranny is annoying, because the fluid can't be accessed via the engine compartment. its a "sealed" tranny, which means i need to pick up the entire car to get to it. Would like to replace the seats. Amazing stereo system.
