Driver's-side airbags were a new standard feature introduced in the 1992 Ford Aerostar. Front bucket seats, which had previously been an option on most trims (standard in the Eddie Bauer trim) were now offered as standard. Apart from the new features, the biggest changes in the '92 Aerostar were in its styling: the front end was redesigned, with a broader, squarer look, a new grille treatment, and flush-mounted headlamps. Inside the cabin, the dashboard had a new look; a column-mounted gearshift made it easier to access the rear seats from the front.
Trims available on the 1992 Aerostar were the XL, XLT, and Eddie Bauer, with a Sport appearance package offered for the XL and XLT. An Extended bodystyle provided an additional 29 cubic feet of cargo volume. Buyers had the option of upgrading from rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive; antilock rear disc brakes were standard on both drive systems.
The '92 Ford Aerostar wasn't exactly a monster under the hood. The entry-level engine was a 145-horsepower Vulcan V6. Buyers could upgrade to the 155-horsepower Cologne V6, which delivered 230 lb.-ft. of torque. The upside of this moderate power was impressive fuel efficiency, especially for a midsize minivan with a curb weight around 3400 pounds: the Aerostar rated at 17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway.
Reliability, comfort, toughness, and value were the Aerostar's main selling points. The guys in Dearborn targeted the van to a suburban market looking for solid family transportation (though the Extended models were also popular with tradespeople and small business owners looking for something more comfortable than a panel van). Conversions for people in wheelchairs and with other disabilities remained a small but steady part of the Aerostar's market.
3 Overall rating
(3 reviews)Great 4WD system for Ice and Snow, Comfortable, Good Power, Tows 3.5k well, Great for Long Distance on Highway, Lots of Room, Very Reliable, Better than my previous Astro AWD, some computers but not like new cars, Cheap and Uncomplicated, a little thirsty 18mpg combined, poor crash rating, Prone to Rust, not good for off-road-low ground clearance
Would be great if it was closer to where I am here in Utah, and I wish it had a exterior sun visor above the windshield, and for the van to be a bit cheaper price because of the year it is, I think its just a little bit too much.
It was my first car. Bumper was cracked because of my accident, but we bought a new one. It's like driving a big box. Fits friends though so it's alright. It was fun, but now not so much. It needs a new paint job, and something more compact. (Trying to sell it now.)
