Mazda's MPV minivan was available with both two-wheel (rear) and four-wheel drive versions for 1990. The two-wheel-drive models came with a 2.6-liter four-cylinder engine that produced 121 horsepower. Two-wheel-drive models came in both standard and LX passenger van versions, as well as a cargo van version. The four-wheel-drive MPV was equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission was standard, while a four-speed automatic was optional. Standard features included bucket seats, power brakes, a tilt steering wheel, power steering, power exterior mirrors, and rear-wheel anti-lock brakes. The LX model added cruise control, power door locks, power windows, alloy wheels, and a premium audio system. Drivers noted that although the MPV's ride could be a bit rough, the van handled and maneuvered well. Roominess and comfort were also cited as positive points, as were safety features such as five shoulder seat belts. On the downside, gas mileage was not as good as expected.
