Overview

Using numbers is a handy way to keep track of the status level of cars (and thereby the status of their owners!). In this vein, the 1990 Audi 90 falls somewhere between the starter car Audi 80 and the more upscale Audi 100 luxury sedan. In fact, the Audi 90 is simply a higher-end version of the 80, offering that much more comfort, sportiness, and luxury, but not quite as much as the Audi 100.
Available as either a regular sedan or a quattro, both trims feature a 2.3-liter, 5-cylinder, 130-hp engine and 5-speed manual transmission. A 3-speed automatic transmission is optional. ABS brakes are standard on both models. The quattro adds a rear spoiler, fog lights, sport-style seats, and leather upholstery, in keeping with its rugged image. A quattro coupe is powered by the same engine, but tuned to reach 164 horsepower, and decked out with leather seats, wood trim, and extra sport-inspired gauges.
There are many things to like about the Audi 90, according to owners. It's sportier than the 80 in both looks and performance, offers a ton of standard features, and boasts good handling, power, and brakes. The quattro is a monster in snowy or rough road conditions. And even more important, the Audi 90, like all Audis, seems to run forever and never look a year older. Don't be suprised if your Audi reaches 300,000km (186,000 miles! How does it do it? Much has to do with a special durable zinc coating that prevents the wear and tear and age spots that afflict many cars. Audi is known for hugely expensive parts and repairs, and that remains the number one complaint among owners. Some also feel the back seat and trunk could be bigger.

Not the most reliable car, but not too bad for one that's 18 years old with almost 200K on the clock. Little stuff breaks here and there and can be pricey to fix, but I'm still on the original engine, transmission AND CLUTCH. For thos of you who drive stick, you know that's pretty damn good to have almost 200K on the factory clutch. Performace is solid, 160ish hp on a 3100lb car, not gonna win any drag races, but cornering is decent, especially for a car this old. It helps that it's the 20v Quattro model, which has upgraded suspension, transmission, and wheels/tires. Winter performance is very impressive. 12-18" of snow doesn't stop this car! Even with half-worn all-season tires, I had no problem driving through a few snowstorms, passing SUVs and semis with confidence. Definitely would make a perfect winter car for handling, but not so much for reliability. The starter went out on me in the middle of the winter and then the radiator had problems.

I LOVE THIS CAR!! It's had some electrical issues, which is hard and expensive to fix because of it's rarity. But it handles better than any car I have ever driven (including some higher end sports cars). It has the 5 cyl 20 valve engine that most people put into their cars, and is easy to turbo and get more power. Stock, it's not a super fast car, it's more for handling. Anyways, I've been in love with this car for almost 10 years and I think I'd rather sell my husband.

The Audi 90 might not have the biggest engine or access to hi-tech transmissions, but it is comfortably the quickest version on sale.

This car was a beauty to drive but when the mileage hit 70K all hell broke loose. There wasn't anything that didn't need replacing and anything that could go wrong did. I was really sad to part with it though but the whole ront end was shot and my mechanic wouldn't let me drive it on the freeway. It must not have put me off Audis though as I have one now.
