Overview

As the SUV began its inexorable rise in popularity, at least in the American market, the 1986 Jeep Cherokee benefited from the growth of this market niche. Its solid unibody construction and reputation for reliability made it a popular choice for drivers looking for a compact sport utility vehicle with a roomy cabin and plenty of cargo space.
The '86 Cherokee retained some of the features that had made earlier Cherokees so popular with the off-road set; high ground clearance and rugged four-wheel drive took the SUV over a variety of terrains with ease. Quadra-Link suspension helped add to the Cherokee's reputation as a tough 4x4 vehicle.
Enginewise, there wasn't much to write home about. The 1986 Cherokee shipped off the line with a 2.5 liter AMC inline-4, clocked at 121 horsepower; the other option for 1984 models was the GM 60-Degree V62 (the two-barrel carburetor version designed for the Chevy S-10 and Blazer), delivering 115 horsepower and 150 lb.-ft. of torque.

I bought this 1986 Cherokee Chief 8 years age. I live in the High Sierras and it spends alot of time in 4x4. The 2.5 4 banger giver 24 highway as long as I keep it at 55-60. Thanks to Jimmy Carter it was built to give best economy at 55 mph, that was th legal speed limit in 1986. If you look at the spec's on horsepower and torque you will see torque peaks at 2650 RPM appx. That just happens to be it's RPM at 58 mph, That explains why it dropps MPG alot after 58mph. At 70mph that little 4 banger is realling humming like a sewing machine...getting 20 mpg. That is too high of rpm's for longgevity as well. If you are driving one of these your not a sports car guy anyways, take it slow enjoy the view thats whaqt a jeep is built for anyways, so don't whine bout power, but they do corner well.
